Minimax at Husum WindEnergy 2012 - Stand E22 in hall 3

Effective fire protection for the wind energy sector: Onshore and offshore

(PresseBox) (Bad Oldesloe, )
For more than a decade, Minimax has stood for safe fire protection for wind energy systems. Minimax offers tried and tested solutions and components for retrofits in existing towers and installation in new facilities in the onshore and offshore sector. Experts from the Minimax Competence Centre Wind demonstrate their key product innovations for effective fire protection on wind energy systems in hall 3 at stand E22.

So that fires can be detected at an early stage and so that immediate extinguishing actions can be taken, Minimax offers the new AMX 4004 aspirating smoke detector, which perfectly enhances the fire detection and extinguishing control panel FMZ 5000 mod 12. The more sophisticated inert gas fire protection systems assure effective fire fighting for high-quality electrical systems.

New Minimax aspirating smoke detector: AMX4004 WEA

The AMX4004 WEA is an aspirating smoke detector with a sturdy industrial design which is designed for the particular requirements and conditions encountered in wind energy plants. It can already detect fires in the initial phase.

The AMX4004 WEA continuously takes air samples in the area being monitored, which are then piped to the sensors. The sensors analyse the smoke aerosol gases and also optionally the conflagration gases. Up to three sensors, which can be used in combination, guarantee the reliable and early warning of fires with a high level of security against false alarms. This is assured by the robust industrial design which renders the AMX4004 WEA insensitive to the harsh operating conditions of the wind energy plants. Intelligent evaluation algorithms ensure that there is synchronisation with typical disturbance variables prior to an alert.

The AMX4004 WEA is a reliable and durable piece of equipment which will withstand vibration as well as extreme variations in temperature and extreme climatic conditions. An integrated air-flow monitoring system also ensures that monitoring runs faultlessly when the control cabinets are cooled.

Inert gas extinguishing system - with new features

"Oxeo" is the name of the system which in the future will group together all plants which guarantee fire protection by using inert gases such as for example nitrogen to reduce the atmospheric oxygen content in the event of a fire.

Oxeo inert gas extinguishing systems, also known as Argotec, are designed for the protection of high-quality systems, sensitive equipment or valuable items which could otherwise be damaged using other extinguishing solutions. They can be used in a range of applications and, among other things, they extinguish fires without leaving residue and do this in an environmentally friendly way with the common inert gas nitrogen (N2) in wind energy plants, and also with argon (Ar) or mixed gases. The gases are a natural component of ambient air and therefore have no damaging effect on the atmosphere. They are also nontoxic, non-conductive and non-cooling.

A newly developed BAS system for the inert gas extinguishing system offers a more flexible installation of the cylinder battery and requires less space in the extinguishing solution control panel. Thanks to leakage monitoring by means of pressure tests, the inert gas bottles can be installed upright. The nitrogen stored under high pressure also reaches the highest nacelle heights within seconds via a pipe line.

The newly developed 3/4-inch extinguishing nozzles permit a throughput of the extinguishing agent which is twice as high as that for 1/2-inch nozzles. This means that up to 50% fewer nozzles are needed, thus giving considerably more flexibility in system planning - in particular for the pipe networks.

The extinguishing process of Oxeo inert gas extinguishing systems is automatically activated by fire detection and control systems, but it can also be actuated manually. The modular, multi-area inert gas extinguishing system adapts to virtually any conversion or extension. Once the fire has been extinguished, the wind energy plant can be quickly put into operation again as nitrogen extinguishes without leaving residue.

Fire detection and extinguishing control panel FMZ 5000 mod 12

The FMZ 5000 mod 12 offers a virtually instantaneous fire detection and is used for the activation and monitoring of water and gas extinguishing systems.

If a detector detects a fire, the fire detection control panel switches off the wind energy plant and activates other programmed control procedures. The incident is then transmitted to a permanently staffed post. If however the fire continues to burn even though the plant has been switched off, and if another detector triggers an alarm, the fire detection and extinguishing control panel FMZ 5000 mod 12 activates the extinguishing system. The control panel also combines all reports and status information which can be published at any time on the monitoring system of the wind energy plant. Remote diagnosis and operation is also possible from an external control centre. It is triggered by the tried and tested fire detection and extinguishing control technology of Minimax such as the AMX4004 WEA or the disruption-resistant UniVario flame detectors which transmit a signal to the FMZ 5000 mod 12 fire detection and extinguishing control panel if there is a fire. In the event of a fire, the control panel actuates the water or inert gas supply unit. At the same time, it triggers an acoustic and optical alarm and transmits a signal to a permanently manned station. Furthermore, Minimax also demonstrates the many options of modern alerting at the trade show.

Minimax looks forward to seeing many interested visitors at the trade show in hall 3, stand E22.
