Neben der Forschung wurde Torsten John auch für seine interdisziplinäre und internationale Zusammenarbeit gewürdigt. Herr John arbeitet für seine Promotion nicht nur in Leipzig, sondern kooperiert mit Wissenschaftlern in Australien und war selbst für 14 Monate an der Monash University in Melbourne. Weiterhin engagierte er sich über mehrere Jahre im JungChemikerForum (JCF) der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) und ist aktuell im Vorstand des europäischen Jungchemiker-Netzwerks (EYCN) tätig. In seinen Funktionen organisierte er vielzählige Projekte für die Vernetzung junger Chemiker untereinander sowie mit der Industrie, um potenzielle Berufsperspektiven aufzuzeigen.
Mit dem Periodensystem junger Chemiker, welches anlässlich des Internationalen Jahres des Periodensystems 2019 und des 100jährigen Bestehens der IUPAC angelegt wird, sollen weltweit insgesamt 118 herausragende junge Chemiker/innen unter 40 Jahren geehrt werden. Damit will die IUPAC die Vielfalt an Karrieren, Kreativität und Engagement junger Chemiker/innen würdigen, die sich durch ihre Leistungen besonders hervorgetan haben.
