High-precision SHM installed at SureCut Converting Inc.

(PresseBox) (Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA / Oakville, Ontario, Canada, )
SureCut Converting Inc., Canada's premier contract sheeting company, has recently installed another SHM folio-size sheeter, an SHM 1450 DR (dual rotary). Designed by Pemco Inc., a company of the Körber PaperLink Group, this highly flexible machine can sheet traditional paper and board products as well as a wide range of other rolled materials.

SureCut, established in 1998, services North American paper mills, paper wholesalers and retailers and the large sheeting requirements of the printing market. A company specialty is high quality, precision sheeting on a quick turn around basis. SureCut provides excellent sheeting for cover stock, boxboard, fine paper and synthetics, meeting the highest quality standards in the industry for size, squareness and cleanliness. The company can sheet a wide variety of substrates ranging from lightweight fine paper up to 32 pt. (625-650 g/m²) boxboard.

Pemco and SureCut have co-operated for 9 years, ever since Pemco took on SHM. “Once you start with an exceptionally good machine and great service, you have to stick with it,” says Paul Higgins, president and owner of SureCut.

The company’s first folio sheeter was the SHM 1400 SR, an original Strachan Henshaw machine built in England. In 2003, Pemco had taken on the SHM brand in the meantime, SureCut added an SHM 1450 DR. Currently they are working with two SHM 1450 DR high-precision sheeters, the second of which was installed in October 2008.

Sheeting new material

The newly installed SHM 1450 DR will cut any web up to 57 inches (144.8 cm) wide with a tolerance of +/- 0.015" (+/- .381 mm). With a knife load for the cross cutting head of up to 1000 gsm and 600 gsm at the slitter stations, the dual rotary system can handle significantly more capacity with a much greater accuracy than a single rotary system. The cross-cut knife system is a state-of-the-art 'synchro' cutting head offering top quality cutting and a high profile speed curve.

SureCut has the option of working with three shaftless unwind back stands, enabling their new sheeter to run three webs at a time. In addition, the machine has been fitted with a fully automated stacker that supplies press-ready pallets of sheeted product. It also features a non-stop pallet change system, a feature which has helped SureCut to improve their efficiencies considerably.

“Pemco has been very helpful in regards to offering their expertise when we investigated a new material that we would like to sheet on their equipment,” says Paul Higgins. During the test phase at the Sheboygan facility, Pemco tested a 100-lb. (148 g/m²) text weight and 12 pt. (230-250 g/m²) cover stock for SureCut. After some fine tuning the machine was ready for delivery.

Smooth transaction

For Paul Higgins, one of the main reasons to buy a further SHM 1450 DR was the very consistent output quality which this high-precision sheeter provides. “The square and sheet length accuracy exceeds the tolerances of our customers. Maintenance is simple and most of the parts on the sheeter are readily available from Pemco.” Another decisive factor for choosing SureCut was the quality of the service and technical support. “Whenever we have an issue on any equipment installation, Pemco makes sure that our sheeter is modified on a timely basis to meet our needs”, says Paul Higgins. Another plus for SureCut was the dual rotary cross-cut knife system produced in Germany by Pemco’s sister company E.C.H. Will. “All in all, this solution gives us more flexibility to handle the full range from light to heavy weight materials. As a contract sheeting company we must be able to process a wide variety of substrates at a very competitive price”, adds Paul Higgins.

Solutions for large format printers

The market in the metropolitan Toronto area is very aggressive. “The new SHM 1450 DR gives us an edge on the competition” says Mr. Higgins, “because we are the only contract sheeting company in Canada with a high speed machine that can produce a high quality sheet 81 inches (205.7 cm) long. We are now able to assist our customers in supplying large format printers to the northeastern market.”

Pemco to showcase its SHM 1650 DR during PRINT 09

Pemco will be present at the PRINT 09 show in Chicago at booth 3600 together with E.C.H. Will, Kugler-Womako and Winkler+Dünnebier, other Körber PaperLink companies. Pemco’s main focus for this trade show will be the sheeting of board. An SHM 1650 DR with auto splice and high-speed pallet change will be on demonstration, including simulated production runs, for the duration of the exhibition at an Open House in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
