39 light rail vehicles - with an option for 75 more - were ordered from the American subsidiary of the Spanish vehicle manufacturer CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocariles). Vossloh Kiepe Inc. will supply CAF with the drive systems for the vehicles.
The order fulfils all specifications of the Buy American Act. All traction equipment from Vossloh Kiepe Inc., a subsidiary of drive specialists Vossloh Kiepe GmbH in Düsseldorf, is produced completely in the USA.
All of the Vossloh Kiepe technology is built into the compact roof-mounted equipment boxes - two of which are installed on the roofs of the three-part low-floor light rail vehicles. One efficient IGBT Direct Pulse Converter supplies two drive motors in both traction bogies with sufficient traction performance up to the vehicle's top speed of 88 km/h.
Delivery of the vehicles to Metro Houston is scheduled for August 2013.
