Carphone Warehouse Networks Builds Next-Generation Infrastructure with Juniper High-Performance Ethernet Platforms

U.K. Service Provider Deploys MX960 to Enable Delivery of Converged Services and Drive Competitive Differentiation

(PresseBox) (SUNNYVALE, Calif.,, )
Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced that Carphone Warehouse Networks (CPWN), one of the largest independent service providers in the U.K., has deployed Juniper Networks MX960 Ethernet Services Routers in its nationwide Next-Generation Network. The NGN project, which is based entirely on advanced IP and Ethernet technologies, is now live and supporting over 1 million end-users. With Juniper MX-series, CPWN's NGN will deliver industry leading scale, performance and reliability; enabling CPWN to rapidly and cost-effectively introduce new revenue-generating services.

"CPWN has delivered the first mass market end-to-end NGN in the U.K., with unmatched reliability and efficiency that gives our retail customers - CPW, AOL and Opal - the ability to compete very effectively both on price and increasingly on service differentiation," said Neil McArthur, managing director of The Carphone Warehouse Networks. "Juniper Networks MX-series Ethernet Services Routers help enable us to provide this service differentiation by delivering consistently high levels of reliability and efficiency, with the scale and performance we need to meet growing customer demand."

The Carphone Warehouse made the decision to invest in its own NGN in 2005, principally to support its TalkTalk free broadband offer. This was only commercially possible with a converged voice and data network that combined with a program of fully unbundling local exchanges. Today, the network extends to over 70% of UK households with scope for further expansion in the future. While construction of the NGN was progressing The Carphone Warehouse purchased AOL UK, with its 1.5 broadband customers. A year of integration onto the NGN lies ahead and the business is on track to achieve a group target of 3.5m broadband customers by March 2010.

The Juniper Networks MX960 ESR is the largest capacity Carrier Ethernet platform available in the market today, delivering up to 960 Gbps of switching and routing capacity and optimized for emerging Ethernet network architectures and services. The MX960 combines the established performance, reliability and service flexibility of JUNOS software with a best-in-class, purpose-built hardware platform. In its first year, the MX960 has shipped to well over 100 customers, including some of the world's leading telecommunications and web content service providers.

"Innovative service providers such as CPWN around the world are migrating to service enabling next-generation networks to improve efficiency, flexibility and service velocity and monetize their network investments," said Gert-Jan Schenk, senior vice president of operations, EMEA, for Juniper Networks. "We are very pleased CPWN has chosen to work with us to build its next-generation network and this deployment is yet another testament to the value Juniper Networks high-performance Ethernet Service Routers deliver to the world's leading service providers."
