Fully automatic production of high-capacity lithium ion batteries
The ProTrak and S-ProTrak technology consortia, which are funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, will present their latest work and research results at booth H 51 in hall 27 at the Hannover Messe trade show from April 7 to 11, 2014.
Headed by Jonas & Redmann Group GmbH and the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT), the ProTrak and S-Protrak consortia develop technologies for industrial production of cost-effective high-quality lithium cells and manufacture prototypes of these technologies. The projects play an important role in the development of battery-powered electric vehicles and, through their work and research results, help implement the German federal government's national development plan for electromobility and establish a German battery supplier market.
ProTrak - highly efficient, low-contact folding
ProTrak is focused on developing technological innovations, primarily in the areas of handling, cutting, packaging, electrolyte filling, forming, as well as checking and testing. The goal is the integration of a linked modular system concept and optimization of cost-intensive process steps in regard to energy efficiency and throughput times. One of the key processes during cell manufacturing that adds value is the formation and taping of the cell stack. The ProTrak consortium has determined that Z-folding with a continuous separator and separated electrode foils is the most efficient procedure for cell formation. At the Hannover Messe International, ProTrak will demonstrate the continuous supply and air-supported folding of separator material. This innovative method prevents scratches and other damages to the seperator material.
S-ProTrak - environmentally responsible and efficient electrode coating
S-Protrak focuses on optimizing coating processes, and each of the project partners works on different tasks. Jonas & Redmann develops and evaluates system concepts and important characteristic data for inspection technology during coating processes. FMP develops solutions for integrating coating and drying systems optimized for the installation space based on diffusion-optimized convection drying. The Fraunhofer ISIT designs procedures for the direct coating of separators on electrode foils using existing patents, and TU Braunschweig university focuses primarily on the continuous manufacturing of electrode pastes using extrusion to increase economic and environmental efficiency. The consortium will present the progress of its latest work at the Hannover Messe trade show and will demonstrate a solution for environmentally responsible and efficient electrode coating using an FMP coating system.
