The Digital Imaging business unit of the Jenoptik Optical Systems division has developed the electronic module for the camera control and digital imaging of the new LEICA M9 range-finder camera in conjunction with Leica. As such, both companies are continuing their successful collaboration.
"The successful market launch of the M9 has enabled Jenoptik to once again demonstrate its performance capabilities in the field of optoelectronic modules and digital imaging systems", said Rudolf Spiller, Chairman of the LEICA Camera AG Management Board. The digital imaging module, including the camera controller, was specially developed in conjunction with Leica for the high performance requirements of the M9 and went into mass production in Jena at the middle of the year. In this context Leica and Jenoptik built upon the experience gained from their successful collaboration on the M8 camera.
"We are delighted to have surpassed Leica's stringent technological requirements and quality standards and are ready to deliver the high volumes expected with the successful market launch of the M9", said Dr. Dirk Rothweiler, Head of the Jenoptik Optical Systems division.
On the basis of a comprehensive collaboration agreement, last year Leica and Jenoptik expanded their longstanding business relationships. This provides for long-term cooperation between the two partners in the areas of the development, integration, manufacture and supply of modules for digital imaging. Both parties have agreed not to disclose details on the business volume derived from the cooperation agreement.
Comprehensive product portfolio in the Digital Imaging business unit.
Imaging solutions from the Jenoptik Group are combinations specific to individual applications, comprising electronic system components and other areas of expertise in the Optical Systems division such as imaging software, optics, mechanics or LED lighting. Jenoptik specializes in the development and manufacture of high performance imaging systems. The components, modules and systems are used in digital photography, microscopy, amongst others here for life sciences applications and in the area of biotechnology, as well as in industrial metrology and traffic solutions. The Jenoptik Group intends to expand its offering for these areas in the future. The Jenoptik Group withdrew from the loss-making medium format camera business at the middle of the year.
About Leica Camera AG.
Leica Camera AG is an international company operating in the optical industry with headquarters in Solms, Germany and a second production location in Portugal. Seven distribution subsidiaries of the group cover the major markets worldwide. All products from the three areas of photography, hunting scopes and field observation have one task in common: an enhanced image. The product program covers a broad range of photographic cameras, projectors for play-back as well as binoculars, scopes and range-finder equipment for observation. The myth behind the Leica brand was established by lenses - handy, compact precision optics for analog and digital photography, geared towards practical application. Thanks to targeted investment in the manufacture of aspherical lenses the company has accumulated wide-ranging know-how over many years, from production, optical calculations, type of measurement technology used, through to the design and installation of lenses for aspherical lens systems.
All Leica cameras and lenses, projectors, binoculars, scopes and laser range-finding devices are the result of years of experience, accepting no compromises in ensuring high standards of quality, as well as continuous further development through international innovation teams comprising experts and users - implemented in the high-tech laboratory and Leica's manufacturing facilities. The best quality materials, combined with reliable precision mechanics and a careful, thorough approach to manufacture provide the guarantee of brilliant images. Last but not least, the Leica after-sales service ensures that the name of Leica means enjoyment of the product for decades and value that lasts.
