Jenoptik and solar customers intensify cooperation

The Lasers & Material Processing division, a supplier for series systems for specific applications, is becoming also a development partner for the solar industry

(PresseBox) (Jena, )
Thus the Jenoptik Lasers & Material Processing division is providing support for customers during the actual design of future manufacturing and finishing processes. The Jenoptik Group has sold the first laser systems for the research and development areas to various manufacturers of thin film solar cells in Europe and Asia. The R&D systems will be used for the further development of thin film solar cells - both on glass substrates or flexible base materials. The new Jenoptik systems give the solar cell manufacturers the opportunity to test both new and specific production processes as well as to further develop and consequently optimize existing production lines without halting production.

The Jenoptik Group was awarded the contracts due to its extensive expertise in the field of application-specific series solutions for use in the manufacturing process of solar cells. The laser systems of the Lasers & Material Processing division, which are in use throughout the world, offer innovative solutions for all the key steps in the production of thin-film solar cells such as the structuring, edge deletion and edge insulation as well as for the cutting of glass modules. Based on this comprehensive know how in all aspects of the manufacturing process the new R&D systems of JENOPTIK Automatisierungstechnik GmbH for optimizing the manufacturing and finishing processes have been specially designed for research departments.

With the new R&D systems the Jenoptik Group has succeeded in portraying all the steps in the structuring of thin film solar cells on an optional basis. This enables it to offer both systems which optimize processes on the basis of glass substrate as well as systems which have been designed for the development of manufacturing processes for innovative, flexible base materials. Measuring 2 meters by 2 meters the Jenoptik laser systems meet the requirements of research laboratories and simultaneously facilitate the opportunities for the optimization and further development for a range of technologies and structuring processes.

First of all the precise technological parameters and conditions will be calculated on the R&D systems. These parameters will then be securely and quickly transferred to the production systems on a one-to-one basis using the corresponding production methods and software. The R&D system will therefore become a multiplier of production systems for the next generation of solar cells since the new requirements of the structuring process for flexible solar cells which promise significant cost advantages compared with the thin film solar cells on glass substrates can also be calculated and optimized using the Jenoptik systems.

About Jenoptik and the Lasers & Material Processing division

As an integrated optoelectronics group, Jenoptik divides its activities into five divisions: Optical Systems, Lasers & Material Processing, Industrial Metrology, Traffic Solutions and Defense & Civil Systems. Optoelectronics expertise provides the basis for the group's laser and optics business and is an enabling technology for the system businesses of the other three divisions. Its customers around the world mainly include companies in the global semiconductor and semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry, automotive and automotive supplier industry, medical technology, security and defense technology and the aerospace industry.

Jenoptik has approx. 3,400 employees and in 2007 generated sales of approx. 520 million euros.

In its Lasers & Material Processing division Jenoptik makes laser processes - from the semiconductor material to laser source and laser system, through to the system and automation technology for entire facilities - available to meet a wide range of customer requirements. Its core areas of expertise are in customer-based process development, process optimization and automation. The product lines cover mass production solutions specific to individual applications which enable plastics, metals, glass, ceramics, semiconductors and thin-film solar cells to be processed with maximum precision, reliability and productivity. The Lasers & Material Processing division of the Jenoptik Group employs more than 400 personnel and generated sales in 2007 of approx. 70 million euros.
