The Jenoptik Traffic Solutions division is commissioning several projects for section speed control in Austria and Switzerland. The new Jenoptik subsidiary Vysionics received an award for such an average speed enforcement project in Great Britain.
The Jenoptik Group is pressing ahead with its internationalization strategy: in particular, the Traffic Solutions division is currently implementing several complex projects around the world. A current focus is “Section Speed Control”, where the average speed of vehicles is determined and evaluated over a defined section of road. This Jenoptik technology is currently being applied with great success in Austria and Switzerland where they have already been approved by the authorities responsible.
Jenoptik uses its TraffiSection product series technology based on laser scanners for both stationary as well as short-term mobile section speed control. The basic system can be supplemented by customized modules such as driver face recognition, connection to a variable message sign system, the classification of different vehicles, wrong-way driver detection or the identification of hazardous goods transporters.
Award for traffic project in Great Britain
Section speed control is also an established principle for traffic monitoring in Great Britain where it is referred to as average speed enforcement. The new Jenoptik subsidiary Vysionics received the “Prince Michael International Road Safety Award” for this type of project at the start of December. The award acknowledges Vysionics’ contribution to increased traffic safety in the British county of Nottinghamshire.
Vysionics “SPECS” systems are used for average speed enforcement along a 21 kilometer section of the English A614 motorway. They have contributed to an approximately fifty percent reduction in accidents since the start of the project in the spring of 2012 and no deaths have been registered since. Prior to the installation of the SPECS systems, 289 people had either been injured or killed on this busy motorway over a period of five years.
Section control in Austria
Jenoptik has already been active in Austria for several years with various section control projects. Since November 2014, two additional semi-mobile TraffiSection systems have been ensuring increased traffic safety on the Austrian A8 motorway. Systems with driver recognition monitor the average speed in the construction area between the Weibern and Haag junctions. The design of this model series is based on the TraffiTower 2.0, a housing for which Jenoptik received the “iF product design award”.
In the Bindermichl-Niedernhart tunnel on the A7 in Upper Austria, Jenoptik technology is used for stationary section speed control. This tunnel complex in the center of the City of Linz is crossed by more than 200,000 vehicles every day. The high number of entrances and exits means that the technological requirements for monitoring several sections (“multi-section”) are high. That is why a total of 15 different sections of road in the tunnel have been monitored using Jenoptik technology since the start of December. It is the world’s first multi-section system with driver recognition and connection to a variable message sign system. This ensures that the individual systems automatically respond to changing speed limits.

Another stationary Jenoptik TraffiSection system has been in use in multi-section operation, with both front and rear photography, on the Swiss A9 motorway between Lausanne and the French border crossing since autumn 2014. This means that vehicles with trailers or motorbikes can also be recorded along the eight kilometer section.
