Bei der Herstellung von Metallbalgkupplungen sind die Verbindungen von Balg und Nabe ein kritischer Punkt. Während Stahl- bzw. Edelstahlkupplungen mit einem speziellen Micro-Plasma-Schweißverfahren verbunden werden können, ist diese Methode bei Kombinationen von Aluminium und Stahl nicht geeignet. Hier können Klebeverfahren zum Einsatz kommen, die allerdings bei extremen Betriebsbedingungen (Chemikalien, sehr hohe oder niedrige Temperaturen) versagen können. Speziell bei Kupplungen auf der Eingangsseite eines Planetengetriebes kann es bei kritischen Anwendungen zu hohen Temperaturen kommen, welche die Klebeverbindungen lösen könnten.

Das von JAKOB entwickelte und lange Zeit patentierte Fügeverfahren (Bördel-Einpressverfahren) hingegen ist optimal geeignet um mehrlagige Edelstahlbälge spielfrei mit Aluminiumnaben zu verbinden. Hier ist der Betrieb auch in  Temperaturbereichen von -50°C bis +350°C sicher möglich.
