The production industry’s business processes are far more complex today than they were five years ago. This was revealed by a world-wide survey of around 700 SMEs implemented by the IDC Manufacturing Insights market research organization. China’s ongoing need for optimization strategies is highlighted by the survey and confirmed by iTAC (www.itac.de), a company specializing in manufacturing execution systems (MES), as it exhibited at the Nepcon Shenzhen trade fair.
One reason for this increasing complexity is that cost reductions alone are not enough to boost an enterprise’s profits these days. Quality and efficiency are equally important factors. In the survey, several discrete manufacturing industry segments such as automotive, machine construction, metalworking and high-tech electronics were studied.
More than half of the respondents confirmed that achieving operational excellence is increasingly complex. After the crisis year of 2009 when cost reductions were at the top of the agenda, customer satisfaction is today the highest priority again. China is focusing on the development of new products and innovations. The Nepcon Shenzhen (Southern China) trade fair for the SMT industry showed that product and innovation excellence depends to a great extent on process and productivity optimization.
MES: a bridge between ERP and automation
iTAC teamed up with its partner, Diplan, to exhibit in the fair’s German Pavilion. One of the products on show was the latest release of the company’s manufacturing execution system, “iTAC.MES.Suite 7”. The vast interest shown in this product confirms both the survey results and the massive demand – particularly from the electronics and automotive sectors - for MES solutions that facilitate traceability, requirements planning, analysis, efficiency improvements, etc.
Michael Fischer, Marketing Director at iTAC, summarized: “We noticed a substantial increase in the number of visitors to the fair this year and we were able to develop numerous strategically important contacts. While our local branch office has ensured over the years that we have the necessary proximity to the key markets in Asia, the level of interest we experienced this year is unprecedented. China is not dissimilar to Germany these days as it doesn’t aim to undercut competitor prices, but to outshine competing products with innovation and superior quality.”
Customer growth in the “Middle Kingdom”
Quality was also one of the most important decision criteria for iTAC’s newest customer in China. Schneider Toshiba Inverter – a joint venture between Schneider Electric and the Toshiba Group – has opted for the iTAC.MES.Suite. In future, the MES software will support this electrical engine control specialist’s manufacturing processes at its plants in China, Indonesia and France.
