Der Botschafter äußerte sich zuversichtlich zur weiteren wirtschaftlichen Erholung Portugals und betonte die Bedeutung von Investitionen im Bildungsbereich. Er zeigte sich beeindruckt von den Qualitäten des Wirtschaftsstandorts Saarland.
Portugal ist mit gut 260 Millionen Euro Export- und Importumsatz ein traditioneller Partner der Saarwirtschaft. Neben dem Warenaustausch innerhalb der Automobilindustrie und ihrer Zulieferer finden auch Maschinen und Stahl guten Absatz auf der iberischen Halbinsel. Auf der Importseite dominieren Unterhaltungselektronik und pharmazeutische Erzeugnisse. Die Wirtschaftskrise in Südeuropa hat den saarländischen-portugiesischen Handel lediglich 2009 getroffen; bereits seit 2010 haben sich Import und Export wieder oberhalb des Vorkrisenniveaus eingependelt.
