As an example, a consortium of around two dozen partners has been formed to secure the funding necessary to apply for a NRW co-funding project (DWNRW) planning to set up Bonn’s first digital hub. The application has just been handed in. Hubertus Hille (IHK), member of the advisory board says “The idea is to create a space for startups, entrepreneurs, students, scientists, technologists and investors to connect and collaborate with each other and the regional economy. The initiative is stepping into a lot of potential and so we managed to bring together people, companies and organizations such as Deutsche Telekom, University of Bonn, Hochschule Rhein-Sieg, Jörg Haas and some of his companies as well as IHK Bonn/Rhein-Sieg, Stadtwerke Bonn, the city of Bonn and Rhein-Sieg-Kreis.” All together more than 30 partners joined the project determined to invest in a digital future. Hille further comments “You can feel a lot of drive from all the partners involved. It’s about time that the region became more digital.”
Other projects have made good progress as well, for example ‘smart lighting’. The project group is working on a full-coverage of intelligent street lights. “A first prototype is on the way. We are currently testing the technical feasibility”, commented Goodarz Mahbobi, CEO of axxessio, the company which also manages the project initiative on behalf of the mayor. Another group is working on a ‘Beethoven App’ – a mobile, virtual sight-seeing tour showing where Beethoven used to work and live.
“Considering that everybody participates on a voluntarily basis, all my expectations have been exceeded”, commented Mahbobi on the current state of the initiative and the positive outlook for the things to come.
