IDC Study Discloses the Transformational Impact Server Virtualization Has on Existing and Future IT Infrastructure, Results to be Presented at SNW Europe
"The accelerated adoption of virtualization is making the technology a crucial factor, changing buying behavior and deployments of customers throughout Europe," said Nathaniel Martinez, program director for IDC's European Enterprise Servers group. "Customers are not only rapidly exploiting new and emerging virtualization functions such as high availability and VM mobility, they are also slowly adapting their infrastructure to virtualization requirements. This in turn drives the acquisition of richer configured servers, expansion in fiber channel SANs, increased spending on iSCSI-based storage, and a boost in NAS adoption in large hosting environments."
The survey also suggests that many users are pushing their virtual server environments to the limits, which is causing several problems, such as virtual server sprawl and storage I/O bottlenecks.
"22% of all survey respondents claim to have had I/O problems within the past six months and this number jumps to 40% of respondents that fit into the early adopter category," said Eric Sheppard, program director for IDC's European Storage service. "Costs are obviously an important factor, but many storage administrators are looking for ways to ensure that storage supporting virtual server environments can meet current and future performance needs."
The study, Status of x86 virtualization in European Organizations (IDC #GE75R9, October 2009) is based on a survey conducted among current server virtualization users in the U.K., Germany, and France, with the intention of gaining a deep understanding of how server virtualization is transforming server and storage infrastructure directions in these three countries. The survey contains data and actionable analysis that should help stakeholders in the server and storage markets learn from the early experiences of their peers.
IDC intends to provide an overview of this survey during its annual storage briefing held at Storage Networking World, Europe. The IDC storage briefing will be held on October 28 at 08:10 in the SNW Europe conference. To see the agenda and register for the briefing, please visit: http://www.idc.com/...
