Annual IT Investment by Western European Healthcare Providers to Surpass $14.9 Billion by 2016, Says IDC Health Insights

(PresseBox) (London, )
According to a new IT spending forecast report published by IDC Health Insights, healthcare providers' IT spending in Western Europe is expected to continue to grow, although at a slower pace than expected in previous forecasts - total IT investment by Western European healthcare providers is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 2.4% for 2011-2016.

The report, Western European Healthcare Providers IT Spending Forecast, 2011-2016 (IDC Health Insights #HIOH54U, September 2012), which includes market sizing and forecast estimates for the healthcare industry in Western Europe for 2011-2016, shows that IT investment growth will be driven especially by software (5% CAGR in 2010-2016), while hardware and IT services investments will see only timid growth (1.7% and 1.5% CAGR, respectively). On a Western European basis, Public funded healthcare, despite the effect of budget cuts and spending reviews, is still expected to grow slightly faster than privately funded healthcare, currently impacted by the economic climate and by stricter government control of reimbursement fees.

To highlight and analyze country-specific trends and IT spending patterns, IDC Health Insights has also released a series of country reports providing an overview and analysis of IT spending trends and forecasts for the top 5 Western European countries for the period of 2011-2016: France (#HIOH55U); the U.K. (#HIOH56U); Germany (#HIOH57U); Italy (#HIOH58U); Spain (#HIOH59U)

"IT budgets continue to be under scrutiny and new IT investments will be analyzed carefully," said Silvia Piai, EMEA Research Manager, IDC Health Insights. "The need to contain the costs of the traditional scattered and disjointed portfolio of applications in healthcare IT systems is forcing IT managers to understand how they can rationalize. Opportunities offered by third-generation platform technologies (cloud, social media, mobility, and Big Data) certainly start to appeal to resource-stretched healthcare organizations."

Key highlights of the main report include:

- IT investment by the Western European healthcare sector is forecast to grow from $13.3 billion in 2011 to $14.9 billion in 2016.
- The current economic climate, general budget cuts, and spending reviews are taking their toll on IT spending budgets, forcing healthcare managers to look at rationalizing IT systems, and at new delivery models.
- The U.K. remains the biggest IT market, but the short-term outlook is negative, with growth expected only after 2014. France is next, followed by Germany, which continues to be the fastest-growing market (among the top 5 countries) with 4.3% CAGR.

The report, Western European Healthcare Providers IT Spending Forecast, 2011-2016 ( IDC Health Insights #HIOH54U, September 2012) includes a downloadable pivot table providing a detailed overview of the current status and forecasts for the Western European healthcare sector.

Country analysis reports for France, the U.K., Germany, Italy, and Spain provide a country-specific overview of IT spending trends and forecasts and comparisons with previous forecast data and details of specific IT spending patterns by:

- Major technology (hardware, software, and IT services)
- Subsector in healthcare (private and public)
- Type of provider (hospitals and other healthcare providers)
