IBM Technology Brings Business Analytics to Legal Decision Making

(PresseBox) (Armonk/NY, )
With electronic content in organizations continuing to grow and eDiscovery costs escalating, IBM (NYSE:IBM) today announced new eDiscovery software that uses analytics technology to help clients gain better insight into their information, minimize legal discovery costs and risks and improve their operations.

New features in IBM InfoSphere eDiscovery Manager and IBM InfoSphere eDiscovery Analyzer include enhanced early case assessment functionality, extended support for additional types of electronically stored information (ESI) content, and open application programming interfaces (APIs) for partner solution integration. Together, these capabilities accelerate organizational agility in responding to litigation, regulatory, and freedom of information requests, while streamlining the integration of eDiscovery capabilities into comprehensive offerings.

With advanced analytics, clients can transform the way they use information, gaining valuable insight and knowledge about what is happening within their businesses and using that insight to help drive smarter business decisions.

IBM InfoSphere eDiscovery Analyzer utilizes IBM content analytics technology to deliver richer early case assessment capabilities, making it possible for organizations to more effectively build strategies before entering into costly legal discovery review and production cycles. For example, users can now visualize email communications patterns across their entire organization to discover unexpected communications, identify new individuals whose information is subject to review, and trace the flow of topics over time. Combined with other early case assessment enhancements, these new capabilities help drive efficiency and cost savings with earlier, deeper insight into collected information and case strategy.

IBM's eDiscovery complements core information management capabilities and provides a strategic, in-house approach to globally address discovery, privacy and retention requirements more efficiently.

"IBM is the only vendor to provide early case assessment capabilities for all types of content on an integrated enterprise content management platform," said Ken Bisconti, vice president, products and strategy, IBM Enterprise Content Management. "Our new software offerings will help our customers work smarter, strike the right balance between in-house and outsourcing capabilities, and respond to eDiscovery demands and challenges today - and in the future - more efficiently and effectively."

As regulatory compliance requirements grow, organizations are looking for ways to meet those demands while lowering costs and risks associated with eDiscovery.

"We chose to adopt IBM's eDiscovery and archiving solution to aid with the growing concern of corporate compliance - it will provide us with an easy way to search, cull and review unstructured data which would have proved nearly impossible before," said Mark Foster, European CTO, Colt Group. "We worked with IBM Business Partner Neocol UK Ltd as they had the right experience and track record in architecting and deploying these type of solutions successfully."

Additionally, the new IBM offerings expand support for processing, analyzing, searching, and holding multiple forms of ESI support, including the ability to export processed and analyzed ESI in the industry-standard EDRM XML format. These enhanced capabilities enable organizations to use IBM's eDiscovery offerings to bring the benefits of an in-house, agile approach to the management of all content types. Utilizing the IBM Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform and compliance-related offerings including IBM Content Collector, IBM Classification Module and IBM FileNet Records Manager, the new offerings further help build and extend a foundation for managing digital information.

IBM's eDiscovery software now includes extended API support, providing customers and partners the opportunity to deliver customized solutions that utilize IBM eDiscovery software capabilities as part of broader in-house and hosted solutions based on customers' needs. This new support will allow users to unlock the potential value in individual software components and expand and deliver comprehensive eDiscovery implementations.

Utilizing the new API capabilities in IBM's eDiscovery software, IBM and Business Partner PSS Systems are working together to deliver joint compliance offerings that address corporate eDiscovery and legal needs of in-house counsel, reduce the discovery burden on IT organizations, and link in records retention programs for defensible disposal.. The combined IBM-PSS offering will provide customers with a comprehensive offering to manage information based on its value, comply with global legal obligations for data, discover data efficiently, and routinely dispose of information at the end of its lifecycle.

"The joint IBM-PSS offering will provide companies with a seamless solution for corporate e-discovery tasks, including disposing of data at the end of its life, preserving data in place, assessing discovery cost and legal exposure prior to data collection, automating data collection, and culling the data set to the smallest corpus," said Deidre Paknad, President and CEO of PSS Systems. "Joint IBM-PSS customers will be able to lower both discovery and data management costs with closed-loop information governance and management."
