Bereits seit 2004 sind Umlaute in .de-Domains erlaubt. Es fehlte nur noch ein Buchstabe des deutschen Alphabets - das Eszett. Am 26. Oktober 2010 um 17:00 Uhr konnten erstmals .de-Domains mit dem Buchstaben Eszett registriert werden. DENIC entschied sich bei der Einführung des "ß" für eine dreiwöchige Sunrise-Periode. Hintergrund ist, dass vor Einführung des neuen IDN-Standards das "ß" in gängigen Anwendungsprogrammen automatisch in "ss" umgewandelt wurde. Bis sämtliche Hersteller ihre Anwendungssoftware an den neuen Standard angepasst haben, besteht die Gefahr, dass Nutzer beim Aufruf einer "ß"- Domain auf die nun nicht mehr entsprechende Domain mit Bestandteil "ss" gelangen.
