High light output stability for precise analysis - for a safer environment

(PresseBox) (Hanau, )
"All together it is about climate protection" is the national motto of the "World Environment Day 2015", which the UN calls on June 5th, every year to stimulate the worldwide awareness of the environment. Clean water is essential to life. That is why it needs to be protected against contamination or pollution. Heraeus' specialty light sources allow efficient analysis of water and air quality or soils. They support precise analytical results - for a safer environment.

Continuous online measurements of water quality and emissions are a growing market driven by increasing environmental regulations. UV-VIS spectroscopy has been established as a fast and precise technique to detect a large number of relevant substances. However, these applications are even more demanding on the light source with respect to size, life time and reliability. The new Heraeus 5 W xenon flash modules match exactly the optical requirements of analytical instruments.

Whilst xenon lamps are suitable for many white light industrial applications, the high quality and high performance range of the new Heraeus 5 W xenon flash lamp modules is expressly intended for photometric instrumentation applications. These are for example UV-VIS and fluorescence spectroscopy, liquid chromatography and thin film measurement, but also semiconductor inspection or medical analysers. All applications require precise and stable analytical results. Efficiency, maintenance and cost reduction become a major aspect by choosing the right light source for the application.

Heraeus 5 W xenon flash lamp modules convert electrical energy into high intensity light flashes in a very efficient way. Due to carefully selected electrode materials and design, they provide a broad continuous UV-VIS spectrum from deep UV to near Infrared (190 to 1100 nm) with very good flash to flash stability (Fig. 2). Single xenon light source design offers a clear cost and life time advantage over the combination of deuterium and tungsten halogen lamps.

Its high light output stability and low noise delivers precise analytical results even at high operating frequencies. The output intensity exhibits a good linearity to electrical input power for easy scalability of the signal (Fig. 3).

For an easy integration and low maintenance
The new 5 W xenon flash lamp modules are designed as a plug & play solution. They comprise of a xenon flash lamp, power supply and connections. All fully enclosed in a modern designed metal housing with 9-pin D-sub connector for faster instrument design. The xenon flash lamp modules are compact stand-alone units that can be operated on 12 Volt or 24 Volt input and up to a lamp power consumption of 5 Watt.

Their long service life, more than 109 flashes, make them the ideal and cost efficient light source for UV-VIS and fluoresences spectroscopy, as well as online process monitoring or thin film measurement. The operating range with its voltage and frequency limits is dependent on the discharge capacitor size. The graph shows the operating range for a module equipped with a 0.11 µF capacitor (Fig. 4).

Light modules that exacly match the optical requirents of the system
Heraeus develops a wide variety of 5 W xenon flash lamp modules with different beam options and connectors. "In addition to standard options, like side-on and end-on emitting systems or different electrode orienations, xenon flash lamp modules can also be equipped with SMA fibre connectors", explains Torsten Jenek, product manager for xenon flash lamps and modules at Heraeus Noblelight in Cambridge. "That efficiently couples the light of the module into the optical fibre and makes integration into analytical equipment even more simple and fast."
