HUSUM Wind: Optimal abrasion protection for loop cables

This week at the leading biennial trade fair for the wind industry, HellermannTyton presents two tried-and-tested products that cost-effectively protect cables in wind turbine towers against the effects of abrasion.

Refitting torsion cables in wind turbines is an onerous undertaking. It costs around two man days alone to replace just one of up to thirty cables in the tower.

But simple help to curb the effects of abrasion in the cable loop is now available to wind farm operators: HellermannTyton is offering special cable protection products which can be examined on Stand 3B23 in Hall 3 at HUSUM Wind 2015 from 15 – 18 September.

Modern wind power plants are designed for an operating life of 20 years. However, the high torsion forces exerted on loop cables when the nacelle turns mean that the cable sheathing is subject to regular abrasion which can lead to damage of the cable insulation in a much shorter time.

With the Helagaine Twist-In Braided Sleeve or HelaHook Cable Protection Sleeve to hand, maintenance engineers now have a choice of flexible jackets made from polyester yarn with which they can significantly increase the life expectancy of the cable sheathing at critical abrasion points.

Both cable protection sleeves are available in a variety of diameters and lengths and are designed for simple and easy application to and removal from preinstalled loop cables suspended with cable grips.

Should a cable sheath already show signs of minor damage, the affected area can be optimally insulated with the HelaTape Power 500 and HelaTape Flex 2000+ technical tapes before the protection sleeve is fitted.

HellermannTyton invites visitors to HUSUM Wind 2015 to stop by Stand 3B23 and experience these proven products at first hand and discover how lasting operational reliability and safety can be achieved with simple methods.
