As a key part of Juniper's Session and Resource Control portfolio, the enhanced SBR SIM Server (version 5.4) now delivers SIGTRAN (signaling transport) support, which enables operators with legacy authentication infrastructure to seamlessly transition to next generation IP-based signaling networks. The SBR SIM Server also now includes new Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) features that support subscriber authentication via 802.1X and non-802.1X hotspots, Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA), Generic Access Networks (GAN) and Femtocell technologies.
"Emerging technologies like GAN and Femtocells give mobile operators a promising way to open up revenue opportunities and expand service offerings," said Phil Marshall, vice president of Enabling Technologies at Yankee Group. "To take advantage of these new access technologies, operators are looking for AAA platforms that can tackle the challenge of authenticating users, while integrating seamlessly with their existing infrastructure to minimize costs and maximize business benefits."
SIGTRAN is an IETF signaling protocol that provides packet-based PSTN signaling over IP Networks, facilitating the inter-working of legacy PSTN networks with next-generation IP networks and simplifying fixed-mobile convergence. GAN, UMA and Femtocell technologies are logical and cost-effective alternatives to costly investments in legacy GSM/UMTS equipment and provide extended coverage for indoor home and office settings and other hard-to-reach areas.
Juniper Networks SBR SIM Server is a high-performance RADIUS/AAA server that manages authentication and service delivery on GSM and WCDMA networks. With the new features, the Juniper Networks SBR SIM Server enables operators to provide services such as public WLAN, Femtocell, UMA and GAN access, while leveraging existing customer care and authentication infrastructure to keep costs at a minimum. Juniper's AAA solutions are already deployed by more than 100 mobile operators globally.
"Providing comprehensive and flexible AAA functionality is a key factor in the ability of mobile operators to leverage new technologies such as GAN and Femtocell to tap into new revenue sources, protect their current customer base and introduce new services," said Shailesh Shukla, vice president of service provider marketing and partnerships, Juniper Networks. "Juniper's enhanced SBR SIM Server delivers the advanced functionality, high reliability and superior performance demanded by mobile operators who are using these emerging access technologies to cost-effectively expand their service offerings. Eleven of the top twelve mobile operators rely on intelligent, secure and open Juniper solutions today, and this upgrade is yet another example of Juniper Networks leadership in Session and Resource Control solutions for next generation networks."
