G&D assigned to equip BSkyB's Harlequin One

(PresseBox) (Wilnsdorf, )
The German manufacturer Guntermann & Drunck GmbH had been assigned with the task of equipping BSkyB's new broadcast facility "Harlequin One" in West London with KVM extention and switching solutions. The contract included KVM installations for several hundred servers and desktop computers. G&D's British partner, Omnio Technologies, supervised the project. At Amsterdam's upcoming IBC G&D will present an overview of their KVM solutions for broadcast professionals.

Europe's most sustainable broadcast centre

The new building is outstanding for its sustainability - in Europe if not in the world it is reported. Consequently all equipment in use was chosen carefully after extensive evaluation to ensure BSkyB achieved this goal. The remarkable building allows access to natural daylight and fresh air, views outdoors and across floors. As naturally ventilated studios and offices serve for ideal working conditions for people the aim was to separate them from distracting and emission-intensive computer hardware. That's when KVM came into play. By implementing this hardware, people thrive from KVM benefits. The multi-platform content production studios became heat and noise-free as computers are stored access protected in free-cooled data rooms. G&D KVM solutions provide for a seamless computer interoperability and efficient workflow environment.

Caring about the environmental footprint

Reducing the environmental footprint was one important topic at BSkyB's Harlequin studio. "The need for efficient, reliable technology to reduce the overall energy consumption of BSkyB's technical facilities made us plan with G&D's hardware", said Paul Norton, Managing Director of Omnio Technologies. "The ease of use of their products, the fact that they are extremely reliable, intuitive and backed by the best technical and after sales support Omnio had experienced gave us no hesitation in recommending that BSkyB implement G&D solutions as the KVM infrastructure within Harlequin One, confidence in our partners is crucial and that's why we trust in G&D."

Solutions for interaction

Now that broadcast moves from a tape-based to a tapeless culture, every bay needs to access a high number of computers and data to have content available on the desktop. For that reason Omnio chose G&D's CATCenter NEO line, a KVM matrix switch system. It makes a wide range of computers available at each work bay. The CATCenter NEO KVM system also allows easy computer access for the engineers in the equipment rooms where computers are stored without disturbing the creative people at work. By implementing UCON-IP-NEO products the staff became able to access computers remotely over IP- even from home - more easily.

For a one to one extension of a computer to let's say the studio they chose DVIVision and DL-Vision KVM extenders. Whenever more computers are in use DVIMUX switches for both DVI and VGA video and miniMUX switches for just VGA video allow the use of multiple computers from one console at the same spot.

Future steps with German KVM

As BSkyB continue to innovate step by step, the solutions they chose needed to be resistant and well engineered. Products needed to be fit for purpose but also be of a high quality without the need of being exchanged in a few years time. Quality and service are big issues for mission-critical environments such as the ones at BSkyB. G&D and Omnio Technologies are proud and pleased of BSkyB's trust in being reliable partners for both their current and future needs.

Guntermann & Drunck GmbH - Leading the way in digital KVM.

Guntermann & Drunck GmbH

Guntermann & Drunck GmbH was founded in 1985 and has established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of digital and analog KVM solutions.

Nearly all of the public broadcast stations in Germany and many of the private ones too are equipped with products from manufacturer Guntermann & Drunck GmbH. If the concerns are reliability and high performance, broadcasters and broadcast system houses trust G&D components when equipping studios, OB vehicles, technical rooms and for mobile transmission solutions.

With the multi-platform-capable KVM extenders, loud computers that can cause interference are moved away from sensitive environments such as the studio or post-production areas. Computer and user can be as much as 10,000 meters apart from one another.

The special feature of the G&D KVM extender is the variants it provides based on a toolbox system. The products can be equipped according to individual needs with the signals keyboard, video (VGA, DVI single and dual-link), mouse, audio in CD quality, RS232 and USB (1.1 and 2.0). A multiple video configuration is also possible.

The high image quality of the extenders supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1440 @ 75 Hz (analog), 2560 x 1600 @ 60 Hz (digital). Special broadcast keyboards are integrated into the operating concept. For distance bridging, the KVM extenders use standard cabling (CAT or fibre optic).

With KVM switches and matrix switches, many computers are operated and administered via one or several workstations, thus eliminating the need for peripheral devices. The products are used for the support of several computers in the technical room or for simultaneous access of several workstations in an OB van to its computer-supported technology.

The solutions share high-performance, latency and loss-free access. G&D IP solutions also expand the areas of application and permit unlimited computer access to the BIOS level via Ethernet. Additional product groups as well as converters and connection technology complete the portfolio and provide extensive solution expertise.

As the core competencies of development, production, sales and service are all handled in-house, this owner-operated company has the flexibility to take decisions quickly on the market and to act in the interest of the customer. From planning to commissioning through to support, G&D provides high-quality, customer-oriented and personal support. After all, a perfect interplay of all components fulfils the individual requirements of the various deployment scenarios.
