The GEZE FTV 320 emergency exit door opener - a new design principle Greater resistances, simpler to handle

GEZE at BAU 2011 from 17 to 22 January 2011 in Munich - Hall B1, stand 538

Whether in supermarkets, chemists' or industrial buildings - doors frequently have to fulfill dual functions. If in their function as a side-entrance they also have to double as a delivery door and an escape route at the same time, then their safety functions are in a particularly critical field. Emergency escapes and rescue routes must always be open in case of danger and may not be locked, since - when it comes to the wire, it must be possible to evacuate a building through the escape door as fast as possible. When there is no emergency, locks are there to protect against unauthorized access and make possible the controlled opening of a door. After it is opened, as protection against misuse it must lock itself again automatically - that's what the insurance companies demand.

System solutions in emergency exit routes

Escape route control and controlled access by a door - it is now a matter of bringing these two requirements into line in a co-ordinated fashion. For this purpose, GEZE offers integrated safety systems which fulfill all the strict legal demands and guidelines. They will be defining the future and indeed they should already be a matter of course today. The use to which a building is put or its rescue route concept will normally decide the choice of electric system components. These include door closers, automatic door drives with self-locking panic locks, fire and hazard alarm equipment, access control systems, escape door openers and central door controls. The last mentioned act as the "brains" of the rescue route system.

An intelligent system solution e.g. for swing doors, is the combination of a door control unit, an emergency exit door opener and a panic lock. From a technical insurance point of view, this means that the door is locked by the self-locking action of the lock in normal operation and is controllable and secured by the central door unit. In daily operation, the door can be released at certain specified times by the door control unit. At other times of day, the door control unit can enable controlled individual releases such as by an access control system or a key switch. In an emergency, the door will be negotiable at any time through release by the fire alarm system or activating the emergency switch from the door control unit. Then the emergency exit door opener releases the latch of the lock and the door is unlocked.

The FTV 320 principle: the three-latch design for maximum holding power

GEZE has totally reworked the principle of the emergency exit door opener. The result is the new development the FTV 320. In conjunction with the panic lock, this will open doors even when there is a power failure and great resistance such as when people are pressing against them in panic situations. The special new door opener construction with three latches results in a holding power in excess of 4,000N. In an emergency, the FTV 320 will then open doors cleanly and without the latches jamming even when several people are pushing against it. Thus the emergency exit door opener guarantees not merely maximum safety for people escaping from inside the building but also enhanced security against break-in and protection for the shell of the building from the outside.

Extended possibilities for application

The small FTV 320 lock housing fits in all door frame constructions. A compact building element with the two components emergency exit door opener and locking plate can be used for all the escape doors in a building and simplifies planning. The locking plate instead of the more usual latch lock reduces the amount of chiselling in the door, thus saving on both time and the costs of installation. The new design and functional principle also extends the range of application: because the latches are drawn back into the lock itself, installation of the FTV 320 is possible both in a door frame and in a door leaf. Thanks to the small current consumption, up to three door openers can be wired up to a door control unit - a welcome advantage which improves the holding power particularly of double-leaf doors, distributing it optimally over the frame.

GEZE GmbH

GEZE - We open doors and set the standards of tomorrow today

The company's pioneering spirit, pursuit of innovation and uncompromising quality have been unbroken since its foundation in 1863. The independent family company develops, produces and sells system solutions for door, window and safety technology. As one of the market, innovation and design leaders, GEZE has achieved world class status. Starting from the company's headquarters in Leonberg in the Stuttgart region, GEZE is represented by 27 subsidiaries and over 2,100 employees throughout the world. In the financial year 2009/2010, a total turnover of approx. 380 million Euros has been achieved.

The door closers from GEZE are uncompromising quality and rank among the best known in the world. The automatic door systems from GEZE open up an almost unlimited range of door design options. State-of-the-art innovative drives in which a high performance capability, safety, comfort and design are the top priority ensure that they are the focus of every entrance area. The glass systems from GEZE with their award-winning fitting solutions are characterised by functionality and great architectural freedom.

The system concept always in view

GEZE safety technology on doors and windows is important for fire prevention in emergency exits, controlled access and protection of the building shell from the outside. Smoke and heat extraction systems from GEZE save lives, as they make it possible to escape from the building quickly and safely in case of fire. The central control and visualisation systems monitor automation components in building technology and provide security and comfort as a result of multi-faceted networking options. For each of these objectives, GEZE offers individual solutions and perfectly harmonizing solution concepts which combine safety requirements in an intelligent system and open and close doors and windows in a coordinated manner in the case of danger.

Innovative products determine the future

One of the issues in window technology that determines the future is energy efficiency. "Intelligent" windows with coordinated drive and control technology from GEZE save energy and also provide comfort and security. Barrier-free door and window systems, e.g. with remote control, take into consideration the needs of the older generations of tomorrow. Control and monitoring systems of the opening conditions of windows - in the case of fire or for everyday ventilation - will be standard in a few years time. GEZE is already equipped for this. A focus on the future also means sustainability. GEZE incorporates economic, ecological and technical sustainability criteria, as well as aspects of the quality of life, even into the development of its products.

GEZE in the buildings of the world

Important buildings throughout the world are fitted with system solutions and products from GEZE, for example the China Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, the New Acropolis Museum in Athens, the Mercedes Benz-Museum in Stuttgart or the opera and concert house Palacio de las Artes Reina Sofía in Valencia to name but a few.
