Warum SF6 aufspüren?
Ein halbes Kilogramm SF6 hat denselben Treibhauseffekt wie 11 Tonnen CO2. Seine Auswirkungen auf die globale Erwärmung sind 23.900 mal schädlicher als die gleiche Menge CO2, und es dauert ca. 3200 Jahre bis die extrem stabilen Moleküle in der Atmosphäre abgebaut werden.
SF6 wird häufig als unentbehrliches Isoliergas in Schaltanlagen über 1.000 V eingesetzt, die elektrische Energie übertragen und verteilen. Ammoniakanhydrid hingegen wird bei der Produktion von Düngemitteln und als Kühlmittel in großen Kühllagern verwendet.
Das Kyoto-Protokoll richtet sich gegen den Ausstoß von sechs Treibhausgasen, wovon Schwefelhexafluorid (SF6) das größte Klimaerwärmungspotential besitzt. Ein Beitrag zur Realisierung der Klimaschutzziele ist es, wenn derartige Gasleckagen in der Industrie fortan besser lokalisiert werden.
