More than 10 TB SAS capacity per height unit on a rack

With 900 GB hard disks in 2.5" format EUROstor produces space-saving and power-saving RAIDs

RAID systems with 2.5'' hard disks are on the rise. There are multiple reasons for this: the power consumption of these hard disks is considerably reduced and, as a result, they also give off less heat. Moreover, they require less space, making it possible to house 24 disks at 2 U (accessible from the front). Due to the higher number of spindles per RAID system thus achieved, the available I/O performance for the applications, compared to a 3.5" RAID system with the same dimensions, is increased by 100%. And even in case faster revolving disks are used in the 3.5'' system (15K compared to 10K), the number of spindles which is twice as high provides a performance increase of 30%. And now there is even one more convincing reason: with a capacity of 900 GB, Seagate's new hard disks which are part of the Savvio ® 10K.5 series, feature a capacity unmatched so far even by 3.5" hard disks. Thus 21.6 TB may be achieved in one single 2 U RAID system, without the additional costs and the respective space consumption of additional JBODs. In its 2.5'' storage solutions EUROstor successfully qualified the new Savvio hard disks, among others in the storage appliances with Open-E DSS, Nexenta and Windows Storage Server. "Many of our customers would prefer to use more SAS instead of SATA disks in order to achieve a higher performance. But very often the required capacities could only be achieved with much bigger RAIDs or additional JBODs, leading to a considerable cost increase, not to mention space requirements and electricity costs", says Franz Bochtler, President of EUROstor. "The new systems are a real benefit especially for these customers, with SAS disks the capacity of which is only slightly inferior to SATA disks." The price for a ES-8700DSS iSCSI and NAS server with Open-E DSS V6 software, with hardware RAID6 controller and 8 x 900 GB 10K SAS (2.5") amounts to € 8,318.10 including VAT (€ 6,990.- without VAT).
