Intersolar Summit Chile: Solar energy in the Andean country - The beginning of a success story

(PresseBox) (Pforzheim / Santiago de Chile, )
A stable economic development, state investment incentives and good climate conditions make Chile an extremely interesting place for the realization of solar projects. At the upcoming Intersolar Summit in Santiago de Chile that will take place on June 19, 2014, local decision-makers from politics and business will discuss local sales opportunities and special regulations within the country. Additional key issues to be covered include the financial options that are available in Chile and the economic application of energy storage.

Investments in the Chilean solar market have been given the green light. Thus, experts project a high level of growth for the coming years when it comes to the installation of solar energy systems. Today, there are already approved solar energy projects in the South American coastal nation that have an accumulated capacity of 5.95 GW in the pipeline. Additional projects with a total capacity of 3.9 GW are currently waiting for approval. Especially the large, off-grid solar energy systems with the capability to supply energy to remote mines will play a primary role.

In view of this massive extension of the solar energy in the Andean country planned for the near future, the Intersolar Summit taking place in the Chilean capital city's Hotel Plaza San Francisco on June 19, 2014, will be dedicated to future opportunities and challenges for the industry and feature competent experts and representatives from politics and industry. The event will be opened in a prominent manner by the Association of Chilean Solar Energy (ACESOL) with a lecture on the status quo and future perspectives for the local solar market.

An additional important building block of the event is the new energy strategy of the Chilean government. Under this plan, 20% of the national electric supply will come from renewable energies by 2020 and thus, become an integral part of the nation's power supply. Currently, the country's electricity is generated primarily from fossil fuels in four separate power grids. In Chile's largest power grid, the Sistema Interconectado Central (SIC), in addition to fossil fuels, hdyroelectric power makes a substantial contribution to the total generated power of the region. Hydroelectric power accounts for about 50 percent of what is generated. Carlos Finat, Manager of the Association for Renewable Energies in Chile (ACERA) will clarify the success factors for the Chilean turnaround in energy policy in this context.

During the course of the day, a panel of experts will discuss financing opportunities and possible incentive systems. In addition to a solid financing concept for the planed solar project, concrete project development and commercial operation of the system will play a considerable role. In light of this, an additional presentation will focus entirely on the regional features and how they relate to establishing solar systems in Chile.

Due to the expected sharp rise in solar capacity and the increasing use of grid-free island systems, the success of the solar technology in Chile will also depend on the installation of energy storage. This important component of future market development in Chile will round off a differentiated overall picture of the Chilean solar market, which will be provided by the Intersolar Summit in Santiago de Chile.
