Two new Epson Real-Time Clocks (RTCs) for automotive, industrial, networking, and consumer electronics applications available

(PresseBox) (Munich, )
Seiko Epson Corporation, the world leader in quartz crystal technology, announces production availability of its new RX8130CE and RX8900CE Real-Time Clocks (RTCs).

Epson's new RTCs are the most advanced Real-Time Clocks available today with long battery life, small size, and best in class accuracy.

Real-Time Clocks accurately keep track of time in all sorts of electronic equipment and are extensively used in automotive, smart meter, internet security, wireless and wireline networking, datacenter, medical, and Internet of Things applications. Epson is the world leader in Real-Time Clocks with #1 market share and the most extensive product line.

Both RX8130CE and RX8900CE RTC modules are offered in Epson's smallest ever (3.2 x 2.5 x 1.0 mm) package and include an IC and crystal in the package. Most competing RTCs require an external crystal on the board. By integrating the crystal, Epson's RX8130CE and RX8900CE save board space, reduce cost, and improve accuracy as well as functional safety.

Epson's RX8130CE is a cost optimized low power (300 nA) RTC Module featuring a power switch function optimized for rechargeable batteries and achieving an accuracy of 5 ±23 ppm at 25°C.

Epson's RX8900CE uses DTCXO (digital temperature-compensated crystal oscillator) technology to achieve ±5 or ±3.4 ppm accuracy over the entire -40 to +85°C operating range. Epson's RX8900CE power is 700 nA, which is 3x lower than competing DTCXO RTCs. Epson's DTCXO RTC technology is also available for automotive applications in the RA8900CE which is AEC-Q200 compliant and manufactured on a dedicated automotive assembly line.

For the lowest power applications, Epson also offers the RX6110SA which achieves 130 nA operating current and thus is ultimately suitable for any battery driven application.

To protect against power failure, most Real-Time Clocks use external components, typically a diode, to switch from main to battery power. Such external components consume board space and the voltage drop across the diode reduces battery life. Epson's RX6110SA, RX8130CE, and RX8900CE include different versions of automatic power switch that requires no external components and maximizes operating life.

Epson's RX6110SA, RX8130CE, and RX8900CE use an I2C interface and Epson provides a Linux driver to facilitate rapid software development.
