eperi Mobile CardSpace provides secure authentication when travelling

Darmstadt-based software provider makes Microsoft CardSpace available on PDAs and Smartphones

(PresseBox) (Darmstadt, )
Microsoft CardSpace, the solution for administration of digital identities integrated in Windows Vista will be available under Windows Mobile on mobile end devices. The implementation developed by the Darmstadt-based software house eperi enables the secure authentication against web sites and web services of the mobile internet. eperi Mobile CardSpace manages the identification cards on the PDA or the Smartphone and turns the devices into mobile identification media.

By the use of eperi Mobile CardSpace users may authenticate themselves easily and safely in portals and web applications. So memorizing passwords is no longer necessary. Most users create unsafe passwords to easier keep them in mind – and so take a safety risk. CardSpace solves this problem by saving the respective digital identities as virtual cards, which the user just has to choose to authenticate himself. eperi Mobile CardSpace extends the usages. By storing the identity cards on the mobile device the user increases his flexibility as well as the security.

Mobile CardSpace allows comfortable use of authentication technology on the mobile device. So PDA- and Smartphone owner always have their identity cards with them and may access protected applications safely. On the mobile device eperi Mobile CardSpace starts automatically and asks the user to log-in at supported services via identification card.

Also at using the internet via the desktop browser the Smartphone may be used as mobile identification medium. Automatically the program requires cards from the mobile device. For safe authentication the user connects his mobile phone via USB or Bluetooth with the computer and chooses the appropriate card from the mobile device.

Additional features for increased security
Administration and installation may be comfortably executed via the eperi Mobile Suite. The program provides central administration with profile management, remote configuration as well as a tamper-resistant runtime environment. Identification cards are centrally administrated and distributed to the mobile users. Additional functions like Single-Sign-On as well as back-up- and recovery mechanisms guarantee safe and comfortable use of Mobile CardSpace.

„Today, powerful mobile data connections enable being online nearly everywhere. Therefore, the security of PDAs and Smartphones is of particular importance”, Tom Köhler, Director Strategy, Information Security and Communication, Microsoft Germany, says. „Embedding the established technology of Microsoft CardSpace in the eperi Mobile Suite allows mobile users safe identification when travelling and eliminates some risks.“

Martin Kuppinger, Co-Founder and Senior Partner Kuppinger Cole + Partner (KCP) adds: „Information Cards increasingly gain in importance for flexible user identification. The realization using Mobile Cardspace on Smartphones is one of the few already existing valid approaches for the use of mobile devices for authentication.“
