Entering a New Era in Unravelling the Mystery of Matter, Space and Time

Dübendorf, (PresseBox) - The research goals of particle physics are to study the structure of the Universe at its most fundamental level by exploring the basic physics laws that govern the fundamental building blocks of matter and the structure of spacetime.

The important next step for the advancement of fundamental science will be the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva. The start-up of the LHC one of the largest and truly global scientific projects ever will be the most exciting turning point in particle physics. Proton-proton collisions at an unprecedented energy of 14 TeV (14·1012 eV) will in the coming years illuminate a new landscape of physics, possibly answering some of the most fundamental questions in modern physics, like e.g. the origin of mass, the unification of fundamental forces, new forms of matter and extra dimensions of spacetime.

The status of LHC programme as well as the discovery potential offered by the LHC will be discussed.
