Die CPU in einem MicroTCA.4-Crate darf nur 4 TE breit sein, was insbesondere bei der Entwärmung oft Probleme bereitet. Der mit vier Zungen ausgestattete Elma-MCH löst dieses Problem, indem er die gewonnen Daten aus dem MicroTCA.4-Crate via Glasfaserverbindung auf einen herkömmlichen PC übermittelt. Die weitere Rechenarbeit und Entwärmung kann so einfacher und günstiger realisiert werden. Zur Datenübertragung bietet die Karte präzise FPGA-basierte Synchronisationstaktnetzwerke sowie Synchronisationsprotokolle wie "White Rabbit" oder IEEE 1588 (PTP) an.
Elma Forschungs- und Entwicklungsleiter Aksel Saltuklar zeigt sich überzeugt von den Vorteilen des Carrier Hubs: "Das neue Elma-MCH mit der Option der Anbindung der PC-Karte per Glasfaser hat für das MicroTCA.4-System drei entscheidenden Vorteile: Durch die Timingfunktion des MCH kann auf ein zusätzliches Timingboard verzichtet werden. Durch den 16 Lane PCIe Glasfaser-Uplink werden leistungsstarke AMCs wie z. B. die CPU ausgelagert. Außerdem bietet der Elma-MCH die Möglichkeit des Daisy Chainings, wodurch mehrere MCHs miteinander verbunden werden können."
