EVS30: 3M plastic solutions for the megatrend electromobility - Fluoropolymers for use in fuel cells and batteries

(PresseBox) (Neuss, )
At this year's EVS30 trade fair, 3M's Advanced Materials Division and its subsidiary Dyneon GmbH will be showcasing how fluoropolymers can increase the performance and lifetime of fuel cells and batteries. The international electro-mobility industry will meet from 9 to 11 October 2017 in Stuttgart. 3M is exhibiting in Hall 1 at Booth 1G14.

Scientists, politicians and companies around the globe are concerned about the megatrends electromobility and energy storage. Innovative solutions for the transformation of chemical energy (hydrogen in fuel cells) and electrical energy (lithium Ion Batteries, LIB) as well as the storage of renewable energies for electrical automotive applications show an increasing demand and are continuously developed further. 3M and Dyneon are presenting their solutions at the 30th edition of the EVS (International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Trade Fair).

3M fluoropolymers in fuel cells

Fuel cells are electrochemical cells that convert the chemical energy from continuously fed-in fuel and oxidant into electrical energy and dissipated heat in an isothermal process. Fuel cell technology offers advantages over conventional energy conversion technologies thanks to their higher effectiveness. 3M Dyneon Fluoropolymers increase the performance and therefore also the energy output of fuel cells.

Longer lifetimes for batteries

At the EVS30 3M is demonstrating the use of its 3M Dyneon Fluoropolymers in batteries as an additional solution for electro-mobility – especially as cathode or anode binders or for separator coatings. The materials have very good electrical properties and can withstand high voltages. In addition, they exhibit high flexibility for the cyclic stress on the electrodes. Overall, Dyneon fluoropolymers as binding materials can prolong the lifetime of batteries – a particularly advantage for the automotive industry.

Outstanding properties of fluoropolymers

Fluoropolymers from 3M are characterised by a universal chemical resistance – in particular to electrolytes in LIBs and chemical processes in fuel cells. In addition, they can withstand high temperatures and harsh conditions. Due to these outstanding properties, they are used in electric vehicles or portable applications, because fluoropolymers contribute significantly there to an increase in the performance and an extension of the lifetime of fuel cells.

3M and Dyneon are exhibiting at the EVS30 in Hall 1, Booth 1G14.
