Dyneon launches next generation sealing technology

Custom-made solutions for demanding applications

(PresseBox) (Neuss, )
Dyneon, part of global diversified technology company 3M, has launched a New Sealing Technology (NST) incorporating 3M spheric fillers in innovative high performance PTFE compounds. The new technology helps to master a number of challenging sealing applications, such as rotary shaft seals and flat gaskets, and offers both performance and environmental benefits.

The first product, 3M Dyneon Compound NST 1111R, targeted for radial shaft seal applications, has just passed intensive testing at the Institute of Machine Components at the University of Stuttgart and the results to date have been very promising.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Werner Haas, head of the Sealing Technology department at the Institute, explains: "Some of the advantages compared to component materials currently available on the market include remarkably low permeation, improved resistance to friction and wear as well as smoother finishes. The new high-tech composites produced with this technology perform better in virtually every respect, saving fuel for better economy and greater sustainability, while benefiting consumers and manufacturers due to their improved longevity and processability."

In tests comparing 3M Dyneon Compound NST 1111R to the rotary shaft seal market standard*, the solution showed a 98 % improvement in permeation, reducing VOC emissions; a 17 % improvement in friction resistance and a 13 % improvement in thermal conductivity.

In addition, the new high performance compound reduces leakage to a remarkably low level, supports a higher production yield and optimised seal thickness and it shows a significant improvement in wear resistance.

Other targeted application fields are flat gaskets and tests show that the new technology enables excellent resistance to deformation under load that boosts sealing performance and extends service life while ensuring a low permeation.
