Der Winter hat Deutschland fest im Griff: Bis Mitte Februar 2010 lagen laut Schätzungen des Deutschen Wetterdienstes 21,6 Milliarden Tonnen Schnee auf dem Boden der Republik. Auch dieser Winter soll wieder sehr streng werden. Umso wichtiger, dass es verlässliche Straßenzustands- und Wetterinformationen gibt, damit Autofahrer keine Überraschungen erleben.

Die o. g. Europäischen Normen sind die ersten drei Teile der Normenreihe DIN EN 15518 über „Winterdienstausrüstung - Straßenzustands- und Wetterinformationssysteme“ und helfen dabei, sicher durch den Winter zu kommen. Straßenzustands- und Wetterinformationssysteme sind komplexe Strukturen, die als Entscheidungshilfe für den Straßenbetriebsdienst eingesetzt werden und in der Regel folgende Komponenten aufweisen: meteorologische Sensoren und Instrumente, Übertragungstechnologie, Computersysteme für die Verarbeitung, Darstellung und Speicherung von Informationen, Straßenzustands- und Wettervorhersagen, Warnungen in Beziehung zu Verkehrssteuerungs- und Verkehrsinformationssystemen.

Die Normen dienen der Gewinnung von Daten in Bezug auf wetterbedingte Fahrbahn- und Umweltbedingungen sowie deren Vorhersage. Die Informationen werden üblicherweise für den Winterdienst auf Straßen angewendet und können für weitere Systeme, wie beispielsweise Verkehrsmanagement, Informationen für Verkehrsteilnehmer, Datenmodelle etc. nützlich sein. Es werden Terminologie, Anforderungen an den Inhalt von Produkten zur Beobachtung des Straßenwetters und für die Wettervorhersage sowie an Komponenten einer stationären Anlage eines Straßenzustands- und Wetterinformationssystems festgelegt.

Die Normenreihe DIN EN 15518 „Winterdienstausrüstung - Straßenzustands- und Wetterinformationssysteme“, die europäisch erarbeitet wurde, steht kurz vor der Veröffentlichung. Auch Deutschland hat aktiv an der Erarbeitung mitgearbeitet und seine Systeme erfolgreich mit eingebracht.

Dank der Normen wird die Qualität der Vorhersagen erhöht beziehungsweise sichergestellt.
