The World Future Council and Deutsche Welle team up for this year's Global Media Forum

Joint press release by Deutsche Welle and the World Future Council

(PresseBox) (Bonn, )
Sharing ideals and objectives, the World Future Council and Deutsche Welle have formed a partnership for this year's Global Media Forum in June, where more than 2,000 participants from around the world are expected.

Established by Jakob von Uexkull in 2007, the World Future Council is a global network of 50 respected personalities from all five continents that endeavor to bring the interests of future generations to the center of policy-making. The Global Media Forum, an annual media conference hosted by DW, Germany's international broadcaster, provides a forum for experts from politics, business and science as well as media representatives to discuss various aspects of sustainable development. The first Global Media Forum took place in 2008. This year's conference from June 17 - 19 at the World Conference Center in Bonn, Germany, will focus on "The Future of Growth - Economic Values and the Media."

Deutsche Welle expects more than 2,000 participants from around the world to share their views in some 50 workshops, which will explore steps towards a sustainable and values-oriented economy. Jakob von Uexkull, who in 1980 also founded the Right Livelihood Award, will speak on the closing day of the conference. Joining him will be two prominent members of the World Future Council: Vandana Shiva, PhD, an Indian physicist and environmental activist, and Ibrahim Abouleish, PhD, a successful entrepreneur from Egypt committed to sustainable development.

In Jakob von Uexkull's view, "We have no right to live at the price of future generations. Only a sustainable economy that distances itself from the dogma of growth can ensure that we pass on a healthy planet and just societies to our children and grandchildren." The media can help convey that message, he says, and for that the Global Media Forum is an ideal platform.

The 2013 DW Global Media Forum is co-hosted by the Foundation for International Dialogue of the Sparkasse (Municipal Savings Bank) in Bonn and also supported by Germany's Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the European Regional Development Fund, the Minister for Federal Affairs, Europe und the Media in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the City of Bonn. The North Rhine-Westphalian Foundation for the Environment and Development is a cooperation partner.

After the conference, the World Future Council will hold its 7th Annual General Meeting at the Collegium Leoninum event center in Bonn. The 50 councillors will spend three days discussing "Charting our Shared Future: Towards a Global Politics of Responsibility". The meeting is supported by the City of Bonn.
