Game show for German learners - two teams, one goal: Berlin!

(PresseBox) (Bonn, )
Starting Thursday, September 5, Deutsche Welle (DW) and the Goethe-Institut will send six German learners from around the world on a special journey through Germany with unique challenges. Their goal: a ticket to Berlin.

The adventure game show "Ticket nach Berlin" (Ticket to Berlin) follows six young German learners on a trip through Germany. They compete against each other in two teams: Almudena (Spain), Nichole (Australia) and Eric (Cameroon) start on the North Frisian island of Pellworm and travel through northern Germany. Kristina (Russia), Nasser (Egypt) and Jonas (Norway) start at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, and travel through the south. Both teams' destination is Berlin.

From wakeboarding and geocaching to cooking battles, the road to the German capital will not be easy. Which team will win in the athletic showdown? Who will display the best knowledge about Germany and its people? The tasks that await the participants require a good feel for language, team spirit and courage. Along the way, the competitors get to know interesting people and get acquainted with a cosmopolitan, colorful and culturally diverse Germany. "It was great to see all of these places with my own eyes after knowing them only from my textbook or my teacher's stories," said Kristina Madzhidova from Russia. After filming for the feature wrapped up, her Norwegian teammate Jonas Bertelsen Enge said, "Typical German joie de vivre consists of beer, organic food and gummy bears."

"Ticket nach Berlin" is a modern reality format paired with a comprehensive and free online package for learning German. Starting September 5, a new video episode will appear each Thursday on DW's website, as well as that of the Goethe-Institut. Interactive exercises on grammar, vocabulary and German culture will supplement the 19 five-minute episodes. Extra materials and ready-made worksheets for teachers help create German lessons that are full of variety. The target audience is young people who are interested in aspects of Germany that lie beyond the typical travel guide information. Users can watch up close and personal as the candidates make their way through the hurdles presented by the competition as well as by the German language. Audiences also have the chance to share in the competitors' excitement about discovering Germany.

The series marks an expansion of the multimedia offerings developed in close collaboration between Deutsche Welle and the Goethe-Institut to promote the German language and culture. The joint project is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
