BYD awarded for energy storage project in the US

(PresseBox) (Bonn / Berlin, )
BYD Company Ltd., the world’s largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries, has been honored with the Global Leading RES (Renewable Energy Systems) Award in the category “Tech Driver” for the 31.5 MW Beech Ridge energy storage project in West Virginia. The connection of BYD’s storage system to Invenergy’s 100.5 MW wind farm means substantial progress on the road to clean energy.

The 31.5 MW energy storage system in West Virginia runs adjacent to Invenergy’s 100.5 MW Beech Ridge Wind Farm and provides a fast-response frequency regulation to the PJM Interconnection ancillary services market. The conjunction of renewable energy sources to energy storage systems is a key factor on the road to clean energy. In this regard Intersolar North America provided the perfect chance for the German CleanTech Institute (DCTI) to personally congratulate BYDon their efforts in driving forward on this road. "We are honored to receive this award as it highlights BYD’s leadership in developing and operating innovative energy storage solutions. This recognition of BYD's professionalism in the energy storage field by industry insiders means a great deal to us as a company”, says Michael Austin, the Vice President of the BYD America Corporation.

The development of the project lay in the hands of Invenergy, who worked with BYD’s energy storage systems in the past. And there is still a lot of potential for the future. The Beech Ridge Energy Project, which is named after its location, the Beech Ridge in Greenbrier County in West Virginia, consists of eighteen 1.8 MW modules built into shipping containers. Each one includes four battery strings, four 450 kW inverters to convert the power between direct current and alternating current, a chiller to cool the battery containers and a transformer for the inverter.

“Our development philosophy is quite simple”, says Austin: “Technology is King; Innovate Always. In following this, we have accumulated vast practical experience in building and customizing the highest quality energy storage solutions that meet our customers’ individual needs. This includes the 31.5 MW Beech Ridge Energy Storage Project, the winner of this award.” Beyond the efficient usage of pollution-free energy, projects like this “can reduce dependence on subsidies, enhance investor confidence, and increase resilience”, Austin further states.

The German CleanTech Institute (DCTI) in close collaboration with the market- and research company EuPD Research, the International Battery & Energy Storage Alliance (IBESA) and Joint Forces for Solar (JF4S) choose companies for the Global Leading RES (Renewable Energy Systems) Award. The goal of the award is to honor outstanding photovoltaic and energy storage projects and generate awareness in society. To match the huge diversity of the projects the categories First Mover, Tech Driver, Innovative Application, Unique Location und Largest Project were initiated.
The DCTI continuously identifies international projects that deserve the Global Leading RES Seal. All members of the industry are therefore called upon to recommend award-worthy projects or hand them in directly through the application process.
