- ContiTech enters the Balkan market with manufacturer Kon?ar as customer
- Extremely cold-resistant air spring systems for Sapsan in Russia
- Suspension for electric Elf rail vehicle developed together with Transcomfort and PESA
ContiTech Air Spring Systems has landed important orders for European rail projects. Whenever a new generation of rail vehicles for inter-city and mass transit trains is equipped with innovative suspension technology, the global market leader for suspension products is nearly always involved, no matter where it is in the world. The latest orders come from Croatia, Russia, Poland and Germany's capital Berlin.
Kon?ar (Croatia): ContiTech has managed to get its foot in the doorway in the Balkans with the new Croatian regional train of the manufacturer Kon?ar, which will be on show at the InnoTrans 2010. The Hanover-based company is equipping rail vehicles with air springs in this region for the first time. ContiTech developed tailor-made air spring systems, the springs for primary suspension as well as the bumpers and bushings for the new regional train. A small-scale production has already been delivered. Kon?ar appeared highly satisfied with the cooperation and held out the prospect of equipping further projects of this rail vehicle type with ContiTech.
Swing and Elf (Poland): Warsaw's new Swing tram is unique in two ways. Firstly, the 182 vehicles represented the largest order in all of Europe in the tram sector in the years 2009/2010, and secondly, the Polish manufacturer PESA, headquartered in Bydgoszcz, realized the technical design of this successful model without any external assistance for the first time in the company's history. The Swing's predecessor has already proven its worth in other Polish cities. For the new version, ContiTech developed the bogie and superstructure suspension together with its Polish representative Transcomfort and PESA. Under the MEGI® brand - suspension elements of this ContiTech brand are used to minimize vibrations - ContiTech's engineers developed the bumpers, transverse bumpers, links and pivots for the suspension. In the meantime, Pesa has sold 40 further vehicles for Gdansk and 9 for Szeged in Hungary.
Together with PESA and Transcomfort, ContiTech also developed the suspension system of the electric Elf rail vehicle. The suspension of the superstructure on this type of rail vehicle is also carried out by air spring systems. Links, transverse bumpers, bumpers and pivots of the MEGI® brand are used on the bogie. A total of 31 Elf vehicles were sold for Warsaw, Krakow, and Silesia, and 20 more are being considered for the Polish city of Posna?.
Flexity (Berlin): Larger, more comfortable, designed specifically for Germany's capital - and equipped with MEGI® springs, bumpers and bushings from ContiTech. The new Berlin Flexity tram was developed by Bombardier Transportation, the world's largest manufacturer of rail transport technology, based in Berlin. ContiTech had already supplied metal-to-rubber bonded products for the vehicles of the pilot series in 2007/2008. The Flexity trams have proven to be successful, and within the next five years some 50 new Berliner Flexity trams will be equipped with MEGI® products.
Sapsan (Russia): The air suspension system for the high-speed Russian Sapsan train - or "peregrine falcon" in English - must satisfy the most demanding of technical requirements. The Russian railway company RZD expects the safety systems to function properly even at extremely cold temperatures. For the development of the new Velaro high-speed train from Siemens, ContiTech was the first company in the world to design a test rig with a special cold chamber that makes it possible to test air suspension systems under such climatic conditions. ContiTech equipped all eight of the Sapsan trains on the tracks in Russia with air suspension systems. The trains have been in regular service since December 2009.
