The safe and reliable provision of essential supplies to the next generation and ecofriendly product alternatives for drive belts are the focus of ContiTech AG's appearance at the Hannover Messe 2010. At booth A16 in hall 5, the rubber and plastics specialist is demonstrating the performance capability of its products and applications for the needs of people and the environment, under the motto "Meeting Tomorrow's Needs".

"Again this year, the Hannover Messe is an important platform for us to present ourselves internationally as a futureshaping partner to industry. We have the materials knowhow, the development spirit and the products to create solutions together with our customers for their requirements and the basic needs of people. This year we are focusing on our potential for the urgent questions regarding nutrition, clean water and the reliable transportation of energy. And we are showing how, with ecofriendly products, we create high performance alternatives, because in view of the growing scarcity of natural resources, there is no way getting around making more efficient use of our planet's riches," says Heinz-Gerhard Wente, CEO of ContiTech AG, explaining his company's showing.

Focus on growth and target markets

Sustainable mobility, power generation and efficiency, health, nutrition and the environment - these are the topics that move the industry partners in Europe, Asia and America. A rethinking has been going on for some time now, which is evident in numerous innovations in the field of environmentallyfriendly and resourcesaving products and production processes. Global market and growth opportunities are arising in this field, and ContiTech wants to take advantage of them in the long term. As one of the leading technology companies, ContiTech has forwardlooking products, innovations and advanced developments with which current and future needs can be satisfied with enormous effectiveness. "We are convinced that the only way for a company to successfully develop business is for it to deal with the individual requirements of the various industrial sectors and international markets as well as the urgent tasks our society is facing. In this regard, ContiTech makes a significant contribution," reports Heinz-Gerhard Wente, describing the company's future strength with confidence.

Profitable even in difficult times

This already has a positive effect on our company's economic situation: Despite the global economic crisis, ContiTech was profitable in 2009, once again posting a doubledigit EBIT before restructuring measures. Sales of €2.4 billion were achieved (PY: €3 billion). ContiTech invested €83 million (PY: €111 million), with capital expenditure amounting to 3.4%, nearly on par with 2008 (3.7%). Worldwide it had 22,079 employees at the end of 2009.

Pioneering work for the environment

Coffee makers, machine tools or ventilation systems in passive houses - with drive belts made of renewable raw materials and free of carbon black, the ContiTech Power Transmission Group sets new standards for resourcesaving drives in numerous applications in the consumer and industry sector. One of the world's most successful manufacturers of drive belts is presenting two new belt generations at the Hannover Messe. Focus is on the CONTI-V® PIONEER wrapped Vbelt, this year's winner of the Association for Innovation in German Industry Future Award. "The CONTI-V® PIONEER belt and the ecofriendly timing belt both have the potential to effectively replace conventional belts throughout the world. We are talking about belts here with an enormous market volume. Wrapped Vbelts made by ContiTech are found all around the globe. Companies which realize drive solutions with the CONTI-V® PIONEER will enhance the ecological value of their end devices and contribute to the protection and maintenance of the environment," says Konrad Müller, head of the ContiTech Power Transmission Group business unit, on the effective interplay between ecology and economy.

Reliable, safe and ecofriendly provision of people with essential supplies The reliable and sustainable provision of people with essential supplies places special demands on materials, technology, advising and service. Results that do justice to this sensitive industrial sector, which is highly knowhow oriented, and to the protection of the end user as well as the environment, can be achieved only in interaction. Günter Frölich, head of ContiTech's Fluid Technology unit: "With our topic of reliable 'supplies' at the Hannover Messe, we are demonstrating how ContiTech's hoses and hose lines contribute to the creation and guarantee of supplies for people Hygiene, health and safety set the trend for our innovations and advanced developments. We are active in the food and beverage industry, in supplying people with clean water, in irrigation systems, in the reliable pumping and transfer of raw materials as well as the environmentally compatible operation of agricultural machinery."

For ContiTech, the provision of basic supplies also means that work will concentrate on new and advanced development of ecofriendly technologies. This includes in particular SCR technology, for which ContiTech has developed a new generation of SCR hose lines systems for agricultural machinery, to name one example. Here, experience gathered with commercial vehicles was applied to agricultural machines. With the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process, emissions of environmentallydamaging nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxides can be reduced by up to 80 percent. Soot particulate emissions are reduced by as much as 40 percent. This technology is thus one of the most efficient methods to positively affect environmental protection in the long term. When used in agricultural machines, the system ensures that production of foodstuffs is more environmentallyresponsible and less damaging to the atmosphere.

Special lightweight construction show: The lightweight advantage One of the key technologies for reducing fuel consumption and emissions is lightweight construction, whether with plastic engine mounts, weightreduced hose line systems for flowing media or optimized surface materials for vehicle interiors. At the special lightweight construction show in hall 6, ContiTech will be presenting product developments which have made full use of the special materials expertise and development skills of the engineers who built them. For the first time, ContiTech is showing a transmission crossbeam made of plastic which is 50 percent lighter than its aluminum counterpart and will be standardly installed in the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo 550i.
