DRACON 500 Hydraulic Coupling Sets New Standards

ContiTech develops connection technology for pressure levels of up to 500 bar

Bigger, stronger, more powerful: At construction sites and in agriculture and all other areas with hydraulic applications, assemblies are constantly required to do more and more. The hydraulic lines developed and manufactured by ContiTech Fluid Technology (hall 5, stand A16) have to be up to par, and so do the connections between the lines and the main hydraulics. But the ContiTech developers are not satisfied with merely responding to market demands. That is why ContiTech's newly developed and recently launched DRACON 500 high-pressure hydraulic coupling far surpasses current requirements, establishing the yardstick others will use to gauge their products.

"Today, we are already developing solutions for the day after tomorrow," explained Robert A. Wurm, head of Industrial Lines at ContiTech Fluid Technology. "420 bar is the current standard - and it will soon be 450." With its proactive 500-bar coupling, ContiTech has pushed the limits further. "We are the first to market this kind of coupling for pressure levels of up to 500 bar," said Wurm to underscore ContiTech's technological edge. The coupling has an outer diameter of 90 mm and is designed for DN 32 to enable high volume flows.

To achieve a pressure resistance of up to 500 bar, ContiTech needed to do more than simply adapt its existing couplings. "We had to develop a com-pletely new coupling," said Wurm. The ambitious target could only be achieved with fundamental changes in the design and mechanics - outer diameters similar to those on existing couplings with this rated diameter were retained.

Each individual part of the coupling had to be reengineered to meet higher load requirements. The flow rate and course of flow were optimized to ena-ble high volume flows without pressure loss. ContiTech's developers also eliminated the risk of the seals being flushed away. The quick couplings are offered in a screw-on design. That makes it easy to connect under system pressure.
