Vor kurzem wurde die 21 km lange Brücke vom Festland Abu Dhabis zu Saadiyat Island eröffnet. Nun ist das neu entstandene Eiland auf direktem Wege von Shahama aus zu erreichen, man muss nicht mehr den langen Umweg nach Abu Dhabi Stadt machen, um auf die Insel zu kommen oder diese zu verlassen.
Saadiyat Island liegt ca. 500 Meter vor der Küste Abu Dhabis und wird das neue internationale Kunst- und Kulturzentrum des Emirates. Vier Museen und ein gigantisches Haus für darstellende Kunst sind in Planung. Neben dem legendären Guggenheim Museum entsteht ein Maritime Museum, ein Classical Museum und zudem das Sheikh Zayed National Museum. Das Performing Arts Centre rundet das Kunst- und Kulturspektakel zusätzlich ab. Vor kurzer Zeit präsentierten die weltweit renommiertesten Architekten Zaha Hadid, Jean Nouvel, Tadao Ando und Frank Gehry die ersten Modelle und Designkonzepte der Gebäude.
Neben Kunst und Kultur wird Saadiyat Island mit kilometerlangen unberührten Stränden, einer enormen Vogelvielfalt und großen Mangrovenwäldern beeindrucken.
Übersetzt bedeutet Saadiyat Island „Insel des Glücks“ und soll in drei angestrebten Bau- und Gestaltungsphasen (von 2006 bis 2018) in ein absolut idyllisches Urlaubsziel verwandelt werden. Die Insel wird also zum einen Erholung und Entspannung bieten und zum anderen mit Kunst und Kultur eine geistige Befriedigung bescheren.
Saadiyat Island soll zudem drei Yachthäfen sein Eigen nennen. Insgesamt werden für die Urlauber 29 luxuriöse Hotels mit über 7000 Zimmern und 8000 überaus großzügig geschnittene privaten Villen gebaut. Das Projekt steht unter der Schirmherrschaft von Scheich Sultan bin Tahoon al Nahyan, die Planung und Koordination wird von Abu Dhabis Tourism Development & Investment Company übernommen.
