The market shares of the mobile operating system Android have grown constantly in recent months. Analysts are expecting Android to oust iOS from second place amongst the mobile platforms (behind BlackBerry) worldwide in the coming months.
However, in the business environment for Android smartphones the still inadequate security architecture of the platform is hampering the launch in companies and institutions. The Android solution from certgate promises a breakthrough in this area. "We will be presenting our certgate SmartCard Service at it-sa in Nuremberg that provides the crypto functions for Android applications," explains Jian Wang, Head of Development at certgate. "To demonstrate the performance of this interface, we have realised the smartcard logon and device encryption especially for visitors to the it-sa to provide examples of applications on Android devices. We are now expecting numerous application developers to use this interface for their own Android apps."
With the assistance of the certgate SmartCard Service for Android, VPN clients, S/MIME-capable email programs or mobile banking applications, for example, can have access to certificate memories of the certgate SmartCard microSD and work with the secure keys and signatures of the SmartCard. This opens up completely new possibilities for the use of Android smartphones in sensitive areas. The certgate technology makes it possible to incorporate mobile devices into corporate networks which require strong authentication as well as the protection of terminal devices and protected communication.
A voice encryption for Android is also on certgate’s roadmap.
