In dem Wettbewerb, den das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) im Oktober letzen Jahres erstmals ausgerufen hatte, wurden ambitionierte Bauprojekte prämiert, die durch innovative Technologien und Konzepte das energieeffiziente Gebäude der Zukunft umsetzen. Es hatten sich deutschlandweit 59 Projekte beworben. Die zehn Preisträger, die ein Preisgeld von 100.000 Euro erhalten, wurden von einer unabhängigen Fachjury ausgewählt. Zudem bekommen die ausgezeichneten Vorhaben die Möglichkeit, als Modellprojekte im Förderprogramm "Energieoptimiertes Bauen" des BMWi gefördert zu werden. Ihre Umsetzung soll demonstrieren, dass Gebäude mit geringem Energiebedarf und ansprechender Architektur technisch und wirtschaftlich realisierbar sind.
Am Rande der feierlichen Preisverleihung auf den 10. Berliner Energietagen wurden die ausgezeichneten Arbeiten in einer Posterausstellung im Ludwig Erhard Haus einem breiten Publikum vorgestellt.
