Der Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Tourismus Ernst Hinsken eröffnete am 06. März 2008 auf der ITB 2008 eine Konferenz zum Barrierefreien Tourismus für Alle in Deutschland. Er hob hervor, dass barrierefreier Tourismus ein wichtiges Kriterium für die Qualität einer Destination ist. Nicht nur die Tatsache, dass immer mehr behinderte Menschen durch Reisen eine größere Teilhabe am gesellschaftlichen Leben erreichen, sondern auch der demographische Wandel machen barrierefreie Angebote immer wichtiger. Das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie hat eine Studie in Auftrag gegeben, die die Erfolgsfaktoren für barrierefreien Tourismus analysiert und Maßnahmen für dessen Qualitätssteigerung herausarbeitet. Der Tourismusbeauftragte appellierte an Regierungen, Verwaltungen und Unternehmen, die wirtschaftlichen Impulse des Barrierefreien Tourismus für Alle zu nutzen und entsprechende Angebote zu entwickeln. "Wir brauchen Menschen, die mit Initiative und Engagement vorangehen, die das Thema Barrierefreiheit ernst nehmen und die beharrlich daran arbeiten, andere Menschen für dieses Thema zu gewinnen", so der Tourismusbeauftragte. Er versicherte, dem barrierefreien Tourismus weiterhin großes Augenmerk zu widmen und in geeigneter Weise zu unterstützen. Der Tourismusbeauftragte begrüßte, dass sechs Modellregionen Deutschlands eine Arbeitsgemeinschaft "Barrierefreie Reiseziele in Deutschland" gegründet haben. Die Kooperationsvereinbarung wurde im Beisein des Tourismusbeauftragten unterzeichnet. Das Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie wird im Herbst 2008 eine weitere Konferenz zum barrierefreien Tourismus ausrichten.
