BMZ batteries increase the range of E-mountain bikes

E-bike technology is a fixed part of the sporty bike segment today. The bicycle industry is opening up all new perspectives for cyclists not only with E-mountain bikes, but with E-racing bikes as well.

E-mountain bikes picking up speed

The fastest growing category in the E-bike segment are E-mountain bikes, which more and more people are discovering and choosing as a modern sport and leisure tool. The most radical changes have been in development and in the use of new components. Ever more integration of E-bike components makes development more challenging for bike manufacturers. That’s why around 150 specialists in innovative lithium-ion battery technologies for E-bike systems and other applications work in the BMZ E.Volution Center.

BMZ expands E-mountain bike battery capacity with NCA cells

In the past, bicycles primarily used NMC type batteries with nickel, manganese, cobalt on the cathode and graphite on the anode. “The BMZ Group has developed this technology further, which is why we use an NCA - nickel cobalt aluminum type, because it has 30% more capacity for the same volume and weight. This means they have 30% more range, or they are 30% smaller and lighter weight,” explains Sven Bauer, CEO and Founder of the BMZ Group.

“At the same time, we replaced the graphite on the anode with silicon, which also boosts capacity. To put it simply, the battery just disappears in the frame like it was a smartphone. It’s invisible, but it still allows mountain bikers to travel very long distances. We will make a major leap on the E-bike market with this new cell technology and our 3tron cells. BMZ is developing specialized cells for this purpose, which will be available in different bikes next year,” says Bauer.

Fully Automated Production with Laser Welding Robots

BMZ produces modules using fully-automated laser welding robots. Using laser welding robots allows for high welding speeds and a higher degree of automation. Other advantages include good reliability, high connection quality, extremely high measurement precision, and streamlined weld seams. Products offer consistent quality and low manufacturing costs.

We will be presenting details on lithium-ion battery solutions to industry professionals at the EuroBike trade fair in Friedrichshafen. You can meet with BMZ E-bike experts in Hall A6, Stand 214. For interviews with Sven Bauer, CEO & Founder of the BMZ Group, and our E-bike experts, please contact Dr. Susanne Kaschub via phone or e-mail.
