BMW Winter Tyre Programme sales success

With the early onset of extreme cold weather BMW owners have proved to be savvy shoppers, with nearly 4,000 winter tyre and wheel packages being sold already. In this, the first year of the BMW Winter Tyre programme, demand has far exceeded expectations with the special rubber proving to be a hit with both existing and new BMW owners.

The winter wheel and tyre packages developed by BMW have been specially engineered to operate much better than summer tyres at temperatures below 7°C.

The tyres are made from a different mix of rubber / silica compound which enables them to operate efficiently at much lower temperatures. The tread pattern also features a greater number of grooves and sipes, smaller cuts in the rubber, that retain snow in these recesses for better traction. In wet weather conditions the tread pattern also disperses water far quicker than summer tyres for better grip and thus, a higher degree of safety.

Prices vary by model but start at £600 for a complete set of four winter wheels and tyres on a BMW 1 or 3 Series.

BMW 1 Series Coupé voted Car of the Year by What Car? readers Beating off strong competition from the likes of Porsche and Aston Martin the BMW 1 Series Coupé scooped the category honour for the Best Coupé in the annual What Car? Readers Awards. With not one reader awarding it less than four stars, BMW's smallest coupé then went on to take the title as Best Car Overall with an average score of five stars. The 1 Series Coupé came out on top being praised for its solid build quality, wallet pleasing economy and grin inducing dynamics.

James Morrison, BMW 1 Series Product Manager, said of the win: "To have beaten such tough competition is a testament, not just to the quality of the BMW 1 Series Coupé, but also to our customers who are so passionate about their cars. With the customer being the most important critic, BMW couldn't be more proud to have won such an important award."

The BMW 1 Series Coupé and Convertible will be revised for March 2011 to keep them ahead of the competition. One new feature is the introduction of an Aero Curtain which channels air from the front of the car through two ducts that exit in the wheel arches. This jet of air creates a curtain that smoothes air flow in the wheel arch region to improve overall aerodynamics and lower CO2 emissions.
