Project description
Custom power solution for digital ward trolley
JÜKE Systemtechnik GmbH develops and produces the digital ward trolley “Ultra-Line” from Integrion, which is used for daily patient visits in hospitals and offers a mobile and fully-fledged PC workstation. The trolley can be easily adapted and expanded to suit the different requirements of the stations. The slim design makes it easy to navigate patient rooms. The trolley is completely fanless and, according to Integrion, has a useful life of well over 10 years.
For the ultra-compact energy system in the base of the trolley with Li-ion battery and charging electronics, JÜKE was looking for a long-lasting and fanless AC/DC switching power supply that meets international medical safety and EMC standards. With Bicker Elektronik, the individual requirements could be implemented in a tailor-made power supply solution.
The challenge
Individually configured, medically compliant and durable
A special requirement for the power supply was the output voltage of 33 V DC. Initially it was considered to use a standard power supply with a 36 V DC output to be down-regulated using a trim potentiometer. However, in order to optimally reflect the high quality standards and internal processes at JÜKE, a customer-specific power supply with a preconfigured output voltage of 33V DC had to be delivered. For JÜKE and Integrion, medical technology conformity, electromagnetic compatibility and a long service life of the systems were of particular importance.
Fanless operation in hospitals required thermal analyzes in order to be able to calculate the service life of both individual components, such as the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, and the entire system as accurately as possible. In this context, the power supply specialists from Bicker Elektronik were able to provide the system developers at JÜKE with important information for carrying out meaningful temperature measurements on the mobile power supply unit. The measurements were carried out at JÜKE and the results were used by Bicker Elektronik for a service life calculation tailored to the application.
With regard to electromagnetic compatibility, the customer-specific power supply should achieve conformity with the relevant standards and reliably comply with the strict limit values without the use of additional EMC filters. This challenging requirement reflected the desire to not only ensure the performance of the power supply, but also to ensure that it can be seamlessly integrated into environments that place the highest demands on electromagnetic compatibility.
The solution
Tailor-made PSU solution for mobile power supply unit
As a result of intensive collaboration, the special version BICKER BEO-3036M-B1 was created – a compact AC/DC switching power supply with a precisely regulated 33V DC output and medical approval for the fanless power supply unit. The high quality and longevity of the BEO-3036M-B1 was confirmed both in the series and in the previous temperature measurements and lifetime calculations, including for the electrolytic capacitors of the power supply. The highly efficient power supply also impressed in terms of electromagnetic compatibility. The strict EMC limits could be met without additional filters, which made system construction and approval easier.
Medical AC/DC power supply BEO-3036M-B1
Due to the compact 3x5" design, the powerful AC/DC switching power supply BICKER BEO-3036M-B1 can be integrated into the mobile power supply unit to save space. The particularly high-quality and robust medical power supply for reliable 24/7 continuous operation delivers an output power of 250 watts without a fan (300 watts with 10 CFM airflow). With a very high efficiency of up to 94%, a standby consumption of less than 0.3 watts and a wide working temperature range of -40°C to +70°C, the BEO-3036M-B1 is ideal for closed and fanless systems. In addition to the output voltage of exactly 33V DC, a 5V standby and a 12V fan output are also available.
For international use, the medical switching power supply has a wide range input (90 to 264 VAC at 47 to 63 Hz) with active power factor correction (PFC) and international safety approvals for medical technology: IEC60601-1:2005+A1:2012 (Edition 3.1), EN60601 -1:2006+A1:2013 (Edition 3.1), ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1:2005 (3rd Edition). The high isolation voltage of 6516 VDC between input and output complies with the medical safety standard 2xMOPP for patient contact (Means Of Patient Protection).
Special requirements for power supplies in medical technology
Switched-mode power supplies developed for medical technology hardly differ visually from conventional power supplies. However, the 60601-1 standard places the highest demands on the internal workings.
Medical power supplies go beyond traditional power supplies by meeting the strictest safety standards essential in medical environments. A key factor is the requirement for "2xMOPP" (Means of Patient Protection), which means that medical power supplies must provide two independent protection mechanisms to protect patients from electrical hazards. This double isolation ensures greater security and redundancy compared to traditional power supplies. In comparison, “1xMOOP” (Means of Operator Protection) is used for standard power supplies. The focus here is on protecting the operator from electrical hazards, but not specifically on protecting the patient.
Furthermore, medical power supplies must meet increased requirements for clearance and creepage distances. This means that the insulation distances between live parts and between different circuit parts must be larger to ensure electrical isolation under different conditions. These measures are intended to minimize the risk of arc flashes and electrical shocks, particularly in environments where sensitive medical equipment is used.
In addition to these safety aspects, medical power supplies must meet the requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) according to the 60601-1-2 standard, among others, to ensure that they do not have any disruptive influences on other medical devices and vice versa. These comprehensive safety and quality standards make power supplies like the BEO-3036M-B1 particularly reliable and safe power supply solutions for demanding medical technology applications.
„In Bicker Elektronik we have found a power supply specialist who has become a valuable partner for us both in terms of products and in terms of professional development support.“
