BioConcept car captures the interest of trade visitors from the automotive industry and politics

Successful premiere at the world’s largest motor show – Youngest generation of biogenic materials coated with R-M paints

BASF Coatings’ R-M brand automotive refinish paints are eco-efficient, with an extensive product portfolio based on highly skilled color expertise. This is proven every day at body and paint centers as well as independent bodyshops. Now, at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany, R-M’s paint experts have shown that the paints are up to the task of coating alternative materials as well. Guests from the automotive industry, including a number of OEM representatives, trade visitors, and numerous interested parties, as well as visitors from business and politics, stopped by the exhibition area to learn about the BioConcept car. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) presented a world innovation: the second generation of biogenic materials, commonly referred to as biofibers. The material is 30 percent lighter than its innovative predecessor, a considerable reduction in weight. This DLR innovation was coated with R-M paints.

For Thorsten Schlatmann, head of R-M Distribution Germany, it was additional proof that the BioConcept car platform also generates important research and test results. “We are working on sustainable concepts for Mobility 2020. Our paints are environmentally friendly, offer the users easy handling, matching colors and quick drying times, and produce less waste. We’re all set for the future, no matter what materials the car of the future may be made of.”

For the BioConcept car, R-M polyester surfacer and MULTIFILLER CP were used for the first coats. Then an ONYX HD basecoat was applied to give the car its color. The final gloss was provided by R-M SUPREMELUX CP, a scratch-resistant VOC-compliant clearcoat. Tests had been carried out previously in the labs at BASF Coatings in Münster. “As with all our products, in this case we benefited from the fact that we are a coatings company that does research and profits from the BASF research network,” said Schlatmann.

He is satisfied with R-M’s first-time participation in the IAA. “We felt very good and well positioned on the BioConcept car platform, which was located in the center of the outdoor exhibition area of the large carmakers. Our participation in this car show was a successful premiere for our brand."

The R-M booth served up a special highlight for the general public as well, featuring Smudo, the lead singer of the German band Die Fantastischen Vier (The Fantastic Four) and driver of the BioConcept car. He spent an entire day at the booth talking with visitors and journalists and answering their questions.
