TORUS: Europe's Open Automated Bus Platform for Testing Automated Mobility Solutions

ALP.Lab invites international technology providers to validate, integrate and demonstrate next-generation automated mobility solutions on a real vehicle platform

(PresseBox) (Graz, )
Developing and validating technologies for automated driving remains a major challenge, particularly for large vehicles such as buses. While most automated vehicle platforms are closed systems, ALP.Lab's TORUS follows a different approach: an open, battery-electric automated bus platform designed specifically for the integration, testing and demonstration of third-party hardware and software.

Technology providers, automotive suppliers, software developers, sensor manufacturers, mobility operators and research organizations can use TORUS to validate their innovations under real-world conditions without the need to build and homologate a complete automated vehicle themselves.

TWO AUTOMATED DRIVING STACKS – ONE FLEXIBLE PLATFORM
A unique feature of TORUS is its dual automated driving architecture.

Stack 1, developed by Virtual Vehicle, is based on open interfaces and was specifically designed as a development and test environment. Partners can integrate, replace or extend individual hardware and software components, making it ideal for the validation of new technologies and research applications.

Stack 2, provided by BrightDrive, is a commercial automated driving system with an extensive Operational Design Domain (ODD). It enables automated operation across a wide range of use cases and allows customers to evaluate technologies, operational concepts and business models within a mature automated driving environment.

Together, both systems create a unique combination of open innovation and practical deployment capabilities within a single vehicle platform.

ACCELERATING DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION
TORUS enables the testing and demonstration of a wide range of technologies, including:
+ Automated driving software and perception systems
+ LiDAR, radar and camera technologies
+ Sensor cleaning and sensor fusion solutions
+ Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication
+ Remote operation and fleet management systems
+ In-vehicle monitoring and passenger interaction
+ Artificial intelligence applications
+ Electric drivetrain and energy management technologies

Instead of developing a complete automated vehicle platform from scratch, partners can focus on their own innovation while leveraging an existing vehicle architecture, drive-by-wire capabilities and automated driving infrastructure.

FROM RESEARCH TO REAL-WORLD DEPLOYMENT
Since entering operation in 2025, TORUS has been used by industrial customers, mobility operators and research organizations for automated driving development, fleet supervision, passenger communication, infrastructure connectivity and electric vehicle optimization.

The platform has already attracted international interest. One automated driving technology provider successfully integrated its own autonomous driving stack into TORUS to validate its system on a full-size vehicle platform and demonstrate its capabilities in international competitions.

INVITATION TO INDUSTRY PARTNERS
ALP.Lab is actively seeking collaboration with international partners developing technologies for automated and connected mobility.

Whether the focus is on sensors, software, AI applications, V2X communication, fleet management or complete automated driving systems, TORUS provides a flexible environment for development, integration, validation and demonstration.

By combining an open development platform with a commercially deployable automated driving system, TORUS helps accelerate the path from innovation to market-ready mobility solutions.
