LumaSense Introduces Revolutionary Furnace Exit-Gas Temperature (FEGT) Monitoring Solution

Combustion monitoring solution delivers accurate temperature measurement to optimize efficiency of boilers and furnaces and dramatically reduce emissions

(PresseBox) (Sant Clara, Calif., )
LumaSense Technologies introduced its new combustion gas temperature monitoring solution, a Furnace Exit-Gas Temperature (FEGT) system for use in coal-fired boilers and furnaces. High FEGT contributes to overheated metals, slagging, excessive soot blowing, popcorn ash, surface fouling and excessive de-superheating spray resulting in steam turbine cycle heat rate reductions. Accurately measuring FEGT can improve heat rates and dramatically reduce operating costs. For example, a 500 Btu/kWhr improvement in heat rate can save over $2M annually.

"The LumaSense FEGT system can increase plant efficiency by continuously monitoring the gas exit temperature, allowing operators to optimize the coal-fired boiler combustion process and minimize slagging deposition," said Daniel Schueftan, LumaSense Pyrometer Product Manager. "This system is also advantageous for waste incinerators where monitoring FEGT can ensure that temperature is above what is needed to decompose toxic materials, a growing social concern for many industrial companies."

The center of the LumaSense FEGT system is LumaSense's IPE 140/45 pyrometer, specifically designed for reliable "non-contact" temperature measurement of hot combustion gases containing CO2. The IPE 140/45 features a custom narrowband filter (CO2 absorption band) capable of measuring temperatures from 400°C to 2000°C.

With an FEGT monitoring system, coal-fired generation plant operators can take a major step toward Condition Based Maintenance, saving them time and money. Manufacturers can minimize unwanted slag accumulation and fouling with the FEGT system by setting precise alarm triggers to alert them when to take corrective action and initiate soot blowing operations. In addition, users can easily install and maintain the FEGT system while the boiler is online, avoiding costly downtime. Previously, most customers did periodic preventative maintenance that might require the system be brought down.

"The launch of our new FEGT instrument brings us closer to an integrated boiler monitoring platform," said LumaSense CTO, Brett Sargent. "FEGT can be incorporated with our current BoilerSpection imaging system using our groundbreaking SensorgraphicsTM process intelligence software to accurately detect and prevent anomalous temperature fluctuations. The combined system helps reduce hot spots and thermal shocks that can result in slagging and tube leakage."
