PartSens identifies and documents the size and quantity of particles present – reporting even in accordance with ISO 16232

Fast and easy control of particulate contamination on components

(PresseBox) (Esslingen, )
The technical cleanliness of parts and components is increasingly becoming a factor regarding quality. This makes the reliable control and documentation of the cleanliness of material surfaces an essential work step in manufacturing. As a result, with its new device “PartSens”, the acp GmbH now provides an inspection system for identifying and quantifying particulate contamination on material surfaces rapidly, reproducibly and without causing any damage. Size classification and analysis is carried out in accordance with ISO 16232 (VDA 19) or can be adapted to meet customer requirements if desired.

Residues such as particles and dust from manufacturing processes often impair subsequent work steps such as joining, coating and painting, and may affect the function of the finished product. With “PartSens”, the Esslingen-based company called acp – advanced clean production GmbH - has developed a new control and measurement system for recognizing and quantifying particulate contamination. The portable inspection system is easy to operate using the built in touch screen. It permits single and series measurements to be carried out on surfaces in a rapid, reliable and non-damaging way directly in the production plant or workshop. It’s also available optionally as a sensor module for integration into production lines. Measurements take less than 5 seconds.

Reliable particle recognition on a wide range of materials
With the new “PartSens” device, surfaces are illuminated using glancing light. In this way, the contrast needed in order to detect particles and dust can thus be created on many materials. By using glancing light technology, reproducible measurement results can be obtained at a push of a button in a highly-accurate and reliable way: the measuring head is simply guided over the surface to be measured. The glancing light image is visualized live via an integrated screen. Particle quantities and sizes are also automatically determined and displayed. Any particles sized between 5 µm and 4000 µm which are present are depicted in a live image showing their location, position and shape. This permits accurate information to be given regarding the size, quantity and size distribution of particles – for example, in accordance with ISO 16232-10.2 – without the need for time-consuming microscopic counting or indirect sample-taking, e.g. by rinsing a surface and then analyzing the filter content. Because measurement results are available straight away, immediate action can be taken if limiting values are exceeded. If desired, particle classification and analysis can also be programmed to meet customer requirements.

Versatile implementation thanks to variable threshold values
The new inspection system can be adapted to perform a wide range of measuring and control tasks and is operational immediately. This is due to the fact that limiting values can be set in a variable way, that alarm limits can also be programmed and because the system can now be operated using an optional rechargeable battery. The compact “PartSens” device can be utilized to control and document production-related contamination as well as the effectiveness of cleaning processes on almost any technical surface, including controlling the cleanliness of manufacturing utilities, devices, equipment and manufacturing environments.

Documentation of measurement results
In order to document measurement results, “PartSens” has been fitted with an integrated thermo-protocol printer. Optional software is also available for transmitting measurement results to your PC and for storing them.

The versatile technology used in the device, its simple operation and the compact design make “PartSens” from acp an optimum solution for companies needing to prove and be sure that their product surfaces and manufacturing environments are free of dust and particles. acp systems AG

The company acp – advanced clean production GmbH - was founded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1997. The company is a spin off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. Today, acp manufactures the latest process technologies and products for portable / stationary inspection and precision cleaning tasks in the rapidly growing technology segment of contamination-sensitive and particle-sensitive manufacturing industries.
With its product area of inspection technologies, the company (now based in Esslingen) supplies systems for the direct recognition of particles and structures as well as for detecting filmy contamination on technical surfaces. The product area of cleaning technologies is mainly involved with the realization of CO2 snow-based cleaning systems.
