Der medizintechnische Fortschritt hat die Früherkennung und Therapie von Krebs in den vergangenen Jahren erheblich verbessert. Gleichzeitig sinkt die Sterblichkeit bei Krebs seit zehn Jahren kontinuierlich. "In der Onkologie haben insbesondere die Systeme der funktionalen Bildgebung rasante Fortschritte gemacht", sagt Prof. Dr. Winfried Brenner von der Klinik für Nuklearmedizin an der Charité. "Das nuklearmedizinische Verfahren der Positronen-Emissions-Tomographie (PET) zum Beispiel wird verwendet, um die für Tumorerkrankungen besonders typischen biochemischen Gewebeeigenschaften sichtbar zu machen", erklärt Brenner weiter auf einer Veranstaltung der Reihe "Innovationen für die Gesundheitswirtschaft" des BDI am 7. September 2011 in Berlin.
